    JOB TITLE: ELA Teacher

     

    POSITION GRADE: 82 [salary range: $50,000-$64,610 [commensurate with education, level of certification, and experience]

    DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM: Education

    SUPERVISOR: Director of Education

    JOB SUMMARY:

    Under the general direction of the Director of Education, the ELA Teacher is responsible for teaching students with special and general education needs. Carries out all job responsibilities with fidelity and accountability to the Agency’s Mission, Vision, Values, Guiding Principles and Strategic Plan.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

    + Exercises full compliance with the Agency’s Code of Conduct, all Agency policies and procedures and Federal and State laws and regulations.

    + Maintains confidentiality and security for all client and staff related materials and/or records.

    + Creates a mutually respectful, safe, supportive, and productive learning environment that is inclusive of every student.

    + Creates and delivers ELA curriculum that is grade-appropriate and in alignment with NYSED requirements.

    + Manages the learning environment and student’s behavior in the classroom by establishing, promoting, and enforcing school rules, procedures, and expectations within the Sanctuary Model of trauma-informed care model, Cornell Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) model, and Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) framework.

    + Maintains familiarity with and contributes to each student’s IEP, report card, and transcript, as well as each student’s Individual Crisis Safety Plan (ICSP).

    + Partners with and engages assigned Teacher Assistant(s) in daily classroom instruction, activities, and documentation (ex: student attendance and behavior logs).

    + Attends staff/team meetings regularly and contributes appropriately to the team.

    + Demonstrates, promotes and practices Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging (DEIB) principles in all aspects of job performance, in alignment with agency policies and trainings.

    + Gives input and feedback when necessary in regards to student safety concerns (physical and/or psychological) to appropriate team members in the school and across the agency.

    + Participates in department and agency school meetings.

    + Communicates effectively with students, colleagues, parents, and districts.

    + Other tasks and duties given by supervisor.

    + Fulfills all legal requirements as a Mandated Reporter under NYS law and professional ethical standards.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: NYS Teaching Certification required or in process at time of hire. Successful completion of certification required within six months of hire date. Bachelor degree or higher from an accredited institution. Relevant special education teaching experience (three years minimum) strongly preferred.

     

    SPECIAL SKILLS: Experience in Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS), Restorative Practices, and/or Therapeutic Crisis Intervention (TCI) preferred. Self-motived, strong verbal and writing skills, attention to detail, problem-solving, flexible and adaptable.

    The following lists physical demands an employee will perform on a regular basis: standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling and climbing; Must be able to perform a variety of tasks, climb stairs, move throughout the building , work cooperatively in a team environment and quickly respond to emergencies. Position requires that the employee must be able to restrain clients utilizing Therapeutic Crisis Intervention techniques. Position may also require employee to transport clients utilizing an agency vehicle.

     

    The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully complete Therapeutic Crisis Intervention Training: the ability to drop repeatedly to knees, twist and turn, exert oneself physically at an intense level, and support another adult’s weight.
