Description
Plans, supervises, schedules, assigns and evaluates work activities in the care and maintenance of park landscapes and grounds; irrigation of all parks and appropriate City properties; ground and landscape maintenance of City facilities and City owned properties as assigned. Responsible for creating budget for parks and cemeteries with assistance from both departmental staff and Senior Staff and executing budget within established guidelines Responsible and reports to the Parks and Recreation Director.

Examples of Duties
+ Oversees the building maintenance for several City facilities.
+ Oversees the general maintenance and care of sports facilities throughout the City, including hard courts, diamond, and rectangle grass fields.
+ Oversees the opening and closing of Garden Rapids at the Big Pool and the splash pad and assists throughout the season with mechanical problems as they occur.
+ Oversees the plans, schedules, and directions of work activities for city facilities and grounds for landscaping and maintenance.
+ Oversees personnel's plans, schedules, and assignments for mowing, trimming, irrigating, landscape planting, spraying, and removing trash in all weather conditions.
+ Oversees snow removal or ice treatment when needed.
+ Recommends equipment, approves and/or purchases necessary supplies to complete parks’ work. Is responsible for inventory and serves as inventory control for the division.
+ Recommends, installs, and maintains playground and parts equipment.
+ Maintains all park records, including, but not limited to, new equipment purchases, maintenance of equipment, new equipment installations (benches, shelters, playground), vegetation and tree plantings, signage installations, and field or complex repairs, replanting, or renovations.
+ Creates and maintains parks and cemeteries standards; communicating and holding staff accountable to set standards.
+ Replace dead vegetation and trees using the City’s approved list or recommendations from a local nursery to ensure City property looks maintained and well-groomed.
+ Prepares and/or approves purchases necessary to administer department operations.
+ Recommends goals and objectives for parks and cemetery departments.
+ Implements policies and procedures for both departments.
+ Assists in developing long-range plans for parks and cemetery improvements.
+ Responds to resolving requests, inquiries, and complaints from the general public.
+ Ensure that assigned staff follow standard safety practices and procedures.
+ Makes requests for needs with complete staff work to Senior Staff and City Commission when necessary.
+ Attends and participates in the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meetings.
+ Attends and participates in the Special Events Committee and rallies parks staff to assist with City special events.
+ Establish open communication and positive relationships with recreation staff and encourage parks to do the same.
Typical Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of Park construction, methods and practices utilized in park management; Knowledge of trees, shrubs, plants, flowers and lawn maintenance; ability to supervise, assign and evaluate the work performance of subordinate employees; to work with City employees, officials and the general public. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
Education, Certification and Experience: A Degree from a recognized College or University in Turf Management, Horticulture or Agronomics and five years of experience, preferably in Park Management, or ground and landscape, or a related field; with two years in a Supervisory capacity is required. Valid Kansas Driver’s License required.
Supplemental Information
Environment: Ability to perform physical work activities in all types of weather conditions.
Physical Characteristics: Lifting weights of 26-50 pounds and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
