    Job Description

    The New York City Commission on Human Rights (CCHR) works every day to implement the city’s Human Rights Law through enforcement, education, and outreach. The Commission seeks to address historic and contemporary inequities to cultivate a city where everyone can live, work, and thrive free from discrimination.

     

    Through training, education, and policy initiatives, the Commission aims to root out discrimination. The Commission proactively identifies patterns of discrimination through testing employers, housing providers, and providers of public accommodation. The Commission also uses investigations, litigation, and other enforcement tools to address allegations of discrimination.

     

    The Commission is seeking a highly qualified Reentry Outreach Specialist with expertise and knowledge in engaging with people who have been justice-impacted within New York City and a proven track record of creating innovative strategies for conducting outreach across NYC to advance our mission.

    Key Responsibilities:

    - Reporting to the Manhattan Director, plan, implement, coordinate, and monitor proactive outreaches to communities and people who have been justice-impacted as well as conduct specific Manhattan-focused outreaches.

     

    - Create partnerships and conduct regular visits to jails, prisons, and correctional facilities across the five boroughs.

     

    - Prepare and submit reports, conduct analyses, and create strategic outreach plans to support the agency’s mission.

     

    - Create and update partnerships with community, faith-based, community boards, and entities that work with justice-impacted individuals and bring information and resources on Fair Chance to those entities.

     

    - Provide technical assistance and training to communities on Fair Chance across the city;

     

    - Supports general outreach in Manhattan by conducting workshops and trainings on the New York City Human Rights Law and the different protections for community groups, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, and other entities to promote the Commission’s mandate and to further the Commission’s work.

     

    - Conducts intakes for potential discrimination inquiries from the members of the public.

     

    - Represent the Commission at public meetings, local neighborhood community projects, community/cultural celebrations, and community events.

     

    - Enter, update, and retrieve information on an electronic information storage system to facilitate agency operations.

     

    - Performs all other duties as needed within the civil service title to advance the work of the agency.

    Qualifications

    Qualification Requirements

    1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college plus two years of satisfactory full- time experience in intergroup relations#; community relations; civil rights law enforcement; block or tenant organizing; investigations related to law enforcement; labor or industrial relations; education; social work; or law; or

    2. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent and four years of experience as described under "1" above; or

    3. Education and/or experience equivalent to "1" or "2" above. However, all candidates must have a four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, and must possess at least one year of experience described under "1" above.

     

    # "Intergroup relations" is defined as experience in which the employee's major responsibility is to facilitate communication and cooperation, and mediate tensions between different groups.
