    Position Description

    The Program in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication ( ATEC ) within the Bass School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology at The University of Texas at Dallas invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, specializing in transnational and global media and technology. The ideal candidate’s research and teaching should emphasize transnational and global perspectives on media, technology, and power, with a primary focus on the geographies and histories of the Global South. Areas of focus may include, but are not limited to, media and technology in the Caribbean, Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, South Asia, Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and Oceania; transnational and global media industries; postcolonial and decolonial science and technology studies; and postcolonial and decolonial computing.

     

    We welcome applications from scholars who integrate practice into their research, such as through public humanities, community engagement, or creative work.

     

    The appointment commences for the fall 2025 semester.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Education and Experience: A PhD in Film, Media Studies, or a related discipline is required prior to employment. Candidates who are ABD will be considered during the application and interview stages. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the ability to work effectively in a highly collaborative, engaging, and dynamic environment comprised of individuals with a range of backgrounds, skills, and perspectives. We are seeking candidates able to produce research and scholarly or creative achievements that enhance the program and the discipline, and able to deliver high quality teaching using evidence-based practices to effectively engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

     

    Preferred Education and Experience: A PhD in Film, Media Studies, or a related discipline, with a specialization in transnational and global media and technology, focusing on the Global South’s geographies and histories. Expertise may cover regions such as Latin America, Africa, and Southeast Asia, and topics like global media industries and postcolonial studies. Candidates who integrate practical work, such as public humanities or community engagement, into their research are also encouraged to apply.

     

    ATEC Graduate Programs

     

    The graduate programs in Arts, Technology, and Emerging Communication are designed for those who wish to engage in deep scholarship or to develop artistic, cultural, or commercial applications of digital technology and emerging media. With a diverse group of faculty and a curriculum that integrates scholarly study with creative practice, ATEC programs cultivate creative scholars, scholarly practitioners, and interdisciplinary researchers and prepare students to teach arts- and technology-related courses in colleges and universities.

     

    Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, & Technology

     

    The Harry W. Bass Jr. School of Arts, Humanities, and Technology ( BASS ) is a community of scholars, artists, and creative practitioners defined by their creativity, critical thinking, and cross-cultural understanding. Within the context of a Carnegie 1 doctoral research institution, BASS fosters the fluid movement between traditional disciplines and cutting-edge experimental investigation of emerging technologies. We prepare students with the skills to craft exceptional work, the ambition to take on new challenges, and the critical thinking to make a difference in a globally connected world.

    • Statement of teaching philosophy describing their conceptualizations of teaching and learning, and teaching and assessment methods, and how their teaching practices will engage students from a range of backgrounds and experiences.

    • Research statement describing past, present, and future research, including how they mentor (or will mentor) student researchers and foster (or will foster) collaborative research environments.

    • A writing/publication sample; and

    • Full contact information for at least three academic or professional references.

     

    Priority will be given to completed applications received by January 1, 2025. Reviews will continue until the position is filled or the search is closed on June 30, 2025.
