    Essential functions (job duties):

    Wayne State University is searching for an experienced and dedicated Academic Services Officer I/II in the Office of Law Student Affairs- Law School- at its Detroit campus location. Wayne State University Law School is committed to academic excellence for all students. In this critical, high-visibility role, the qualified candidate will direct the law school’s academic success programing. Reports to the Assistant Dean of Law Student Affairs.

     

    Provide individualized advice and counseling services to Law School students on all academic and nonacademic matters affecting students' success and experiences at the Law School, including course selection, disability accommodations, academic regulations and procedures, and degree requirements. Must be knowledgeable of campus and law school resources designed to assist students with academic success.

     

    Support the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs in coordinating with the Law School's Admissions Office, Office of Career Success, and Law School faculty to identify and address barriers to students’ academic and nonacademic success.

     

    Identify and offer interventions to students facing academic barriers or challenges.

     

    Maintain awareness of trends in higher education and legal academia relating to academic success and support services, seeking opportunities to increase awareness and knowledge of such trends as applicable to the Law School community.

     

    In coordination with the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, develop and implement academic support programs to build effective time management, note-taking, outlining, and examination preparation skills.

     

    Work collaboratively with Law School faculty and staff to ensure that students follow academic regulations, procedures, and satisfy degree requirements.

     

    Provide program support and leadership on various projects and law school initiatives with minimal supervision.

     

    Collect data and prepare reports evaluating the impact of student academic support programs.

     

    Serve ex officio on Law School committees as assigned.

     

    Other student-related duties as assigned.

    Qualifications:

    Juris Doctorate degree required. Minimum 1-3 years' experience in higher education or relevant experience in academic advising, curricular planning, and student affairs.

     

    Excellent planning, organizational and time management skills with the ability to multi-task and efficiently prioritize workload. Critical thinking skills and the ability to propose and implement effective solutions to issues and/or problems.

     

    Desire to work within a diverse environment with the ability to show respect and sensitivity toward diverse communities

     

    Ability to work well as part of an interdisciplinary team, with a demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with colleagues and students.

     

    Strong oral and written communication skills.

     

    Proficiency in various computer software applications (word processing, communication, presentation, course/learning management) required.
