Senior Counselor

Serves as a lead counselor in the design and implementation of mental health programs for the campus community including the provision of individual and group counseling to students, assessment, referrals, and consultation with faculty and staff around issues related to the developmental and psychological needs of college students. Collaborates with the Director of Health Services to provide direction to staff in the absence of the Director of Counseling Services.
+ Provides assessment, individual counseling, group counseling, and case management services to students seeking assistance for a wide range of mental health issues, including but not limited to personal, social, educational, or vocational problems. This may include being assigned more complex and difficult cases.
+ Performs crisis intervention and consults or refers to psychiatric and/or medical resources as needed.
+ Assists with departmental response to mental health related emergencies involving students.
+ Develops, trains, and participates with staff, faculty, and/or students in presenting workshops to promote interpersonal and academic skills.
+ Recommends and designs educational programs to assist students in their development.
+ Provide consultation and resources to faculty, staff, administration, students, and parents around issues related to developmental and mental health needs of college students.
+ Develops workshops for the training of staff, faculty and student staff surrounding mental health issues and college students.
+ Assists with development and facilitation of initial and on-going training of residence hall and other appropriate staff.
+ Coordinate efforts in certain functional areas within the counseling center.
+ Aids specialized programs or to particular student groups as identified by the Director of Counseling Services.
+ Assists in processing student withdrawals, leaves of absence, and re-admissions as directed.
+ Assists in the development and implementation of department/unit policies and procedures.
+ Assist with onboarding and clinical supervision of new clinical staff as appropriate.
+ Researches relevant campus issues such as alcohol abuse, human sexuality, study skills, etc.
+ Participates in enrollment and retention initiatives such as open houses, orientation.
+ Participates in assessment efforts of the Counseling Center.
+ Active involvement in campus committees as agreed upon with Director of Counseling Services.
Job Requirements:
+ Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work or closely related field.
+ NYS licensed to practice mental health counseling. (LCSW, LMHC, LMSW, Licensed Psychologist).
+ One (1) year of clinical experience.
+ Generalist clinical skills and experience in assessing and intervening with a range of disorders, concerns, and degrees of pathology in treatment.
+ Demonstrated ability to work in a diverse environment with a variety of constituents.
+ Awareness, knowledge of and skills to provide services to members of marginalized populations.
+ Ability to handle a busy caseload in a dynamic environment.
+ Ability to handle spontaneous work demands while undertaking projects that require advance planning.
+ Availability and willingness to participate in occasional evening or weekend activities.
+ Effective oral and written communication skills.
+ Outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively and cooperatively with a team of professionals.
+ Strong work ethic and a willingness to collaborate.
+ Commitment to a developmental philosophy toward clients and a proactive student development perspective involving an active relationship with the campus community.
+ Commitment to equity and inclusion of people of diverse intersection of identities.
+ Ability to maintain up to date and accurate documentation.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Previous position in college/university counseling setting.
+ Experience in crisis intervention.
+ Prior leadership experience
+ Experience electronic medical records.
+ Experience giving presentations, and leading group discussions.
+ Experience providing training and education to students, faculty and staff.
Additional Information:
+ Starting date: August 1, 2025
+ Work schedule: Calendar year, 11 months (Non-Obligation month of July)
+ Salary: $60,000-$65,000
+ Reports to: Director of Health and Counseling Services
+ Budget Title: Senior Counselor, SL-4
