The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) seeks an experienced Storekeeper to receive, store and deliver supplies, equipment, specimens, compressed gas cylinders, mail and packages throughout the facility. This includes overseeing the work of contractors that support the operations of the stockroom, and mail room, and escorting vendors that deliver and pick up supplies and hazardous materials. Learn more about what it’s like to work at the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences. *Please note*: This position is expected to report to the office five (5) days per week. *_Duties and Responsibilities (these duties are a general summary are not all inclusive):_* * Unpack, count, sort and examine incoming goods to verify quality, quantity and condition of goods for conformance to specifications listed on the purchase order. * Store supplies, equipment, and materials, including hazardous materials, in appropriate storage areas according to size, shape and type and in accordance with regulations and safety requirements for hazardous materials. * Load and unload trucks, pallets, hand trucks etc. to maintain uniform storage of supplies, equipment and materials. * Deliver supplies, equipment, furniture, specimens etc. to departments and/or storage areas throughout the facility. * Relocate equipment throughout the facility. * Maintain a safe and clean storeroom working area. * Maintain both manual and computerized records of items received, issued and shipped, including description of articles, type and other identifying information. * Operate equipment necessary to load and unload goods, supplies and equipment. * Issue supplies for floors from requisition slips. * Contact purchasing supervisor and discuss deliveries, shipments and amounts of any shortages. * Pick up, sort, and deliver mail and packages. * Package and ship materials according to established guidelines. * Perform simple maintenance of mailroom equipment. * Escort vendors and contractors that deliver and pick up specimens, supplies and materials, including potentially hazardous materials. * Operates a motor vehicle in a safe manner that is used in pick-up and delivery of mail, supplies and courier related functions for delivery to required destinations. * Safe and responsive inside deliveries of compressed gas cylinders. * Oversee the work of contractors and vendors that support the operations of the stockroom, copy center, and mailroom as needed. * Maintains appropriate certifications to perform job duties. * Perform other related duties as assigned by supervisor. *_Required Qualifications:_* * Ability to read, write and comprehend the English language. * Capacity to follow oral and written instructions. * Skill to maintain accurate records. * Talent to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others and to deal tactfully with others. * Capability to exercise sound judgement. * Ability to transport heavy objects. * Capacity to stand for prolonged periods of time. *_Preferred Qualifications:_* * Understanding State procedures governing the purchasing and requisitioning of supplies and equipment. * Knowledge of the right to know law (MGL 111) as it applies to hazardous materials and substances. * Comprehension of standard storekeeping tracking methods including the receipt, storage, issuance and delivery of various stock items including perishable goods. * Understanding proper storage methods such as palletizing, binning, etc. * Knowledge of the types and uses of material handling equipment used in storekeeping. * Familiarity with standard methods and techniques for handling and storing hazardous products and fragile, durable and perishable goods. * Demonstrated knowledge of the standard record keeping techniques and procedures used in storekeeping. * Understanding principles and methods of inventory control of supplies and equipment. * Awareness of safety practices and procedures followed in storekeeping environment. * Knowledge of standard procedures, methods and materials used in packaging materials for shipment. * Understanding of various methods used in transporting goods, materials and equipment. * Familiarity with storekeeping terminology, coding symbols and standard abbreviations. * Knowledge of the methods and procedures utilized for the security of property. * Skill in using small hand tools such as pliers, screwdrivers, etc. * Ability to explain the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, specifications, standards and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. * Knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of supervision. * Valid Massachusetts Driver's License for work related travel. *_About the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences (BIDLS):_* The DPH Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences (BIDLS), predominantly located in Jamaica Plain, provides public health response to infectious disease. These services include programmatic and epidemiologic response, as well as laboratory testing through the State Public Health Laboratory (SPHL). Infectious disease response services address concerns of the general public as well as those disproportionately affected by infectious disease through a variety of risk factors. BIDLS administers ongoing disease reporting for over 90 reportable diseases in the state. Disease reporting review and follow-up with clinical providers and local boards of health is a central function of the bureau. Surveillance activity is complemented by an extensive contracted service system. These services are funded through state and federal resources and include prevention education, community outreach screening for infectious disease, immunization services, health service navigation, medical case management, insurance enrollment, housing assistance, and referral and linkage to infectious disease treatment. The SPHL provides scientific expertise and capacity to identify infectious agents, chemical agents, and other toxins that cause human disease. The SPHL is an active partner in joint activities with other bureaus/agencies such as environmental health, food and drug, agriculture, disease prevention and health promotion programs, and public safety. The SPHL is a reference laboratory of the national Laboratory Response Network (LRN) and is a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Select Agent laboratory.
