    What We're Looking For

     

    Join our Des Moines, IA office and be an integral part of our growing transportation planning practice. We are looking for a team-oriented project manager with Iowa DOT and/or local municipal transportation planning and traffic and safety analysis experience. While the primary focus will be on local and state highway and transportation projects, the candidate will have the opportunity to support our Midwest and natiuona clients through our Central States Office and firmwide transportation planning practice.

     

    Preferred candidates will have a degree in Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Transportation Planning, or a related field. This role supports traffic, safety and transportation planning projects across a wide range of applications, from intersections to multi-state corridors. Candidates will have experience with traffic operations analysis using Highway Capacity Manual methodologies and traffic modeling software such as VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, and HCS. Experience conducting or managing detailed existing and future condition safety analysis utilizing Highway Safety Manual methodologies is a plus. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are necessary to support all aspects of project development and delivery.

     

    Responsible for managing assigned transportation and traffic planning project(s) throughout their full lifecycle including developing the scope and technical sections of proposal and procurement documents to participating in contract negotiations and overseeing the delivery of the project plan to successfully accomplish HNTB’s 4 for 4 performance: delivery of quality work, on time, on budget and to the client’s satisfaction on every project.

     

    This position proactively manages the budget, schedule, technical requirements, contractual obligations, and client communications in support of the project’s objectives. Provides high-level technical tasks while managing and reviewing reports and plans. Coordinates with internal and external partners including cross-discipline and functional teams to address and problem solve design-related issues or concerns.

    What You'll Do:

    + Responsible for development of the project scope and fee quotation and assists in the preparation of technical proposals and contracts in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Contracting Approach (SCA).

    + Serves as the primary client liaison and manages the project team to deliver the scope, schedule, and budgets to completion and to the client’s satisfaction. Assists with client project scoping and contract negotiations.

    + Leads and prepares design documents, technical plans, written reports on projects.

    + Implements the firm’s project delivery plan using HNTB's Sophisticated Delivery Approach (SDA) on each project. Leads the development and the execution of the project management plan. Supervises and mentors team to overall project objectives.

    + Performs coordination with managers on project staffing, including, but not limited to; recruitment, hiring, development, retention, and succession of project staff; development of plan for project staff reporting; and support for performance and compensation reviews.

    + Partners with Client Service Leaders and pursuit champions to assist with business development, building client relationships and pursuit efforts for strategic and mini-mega projects in accordance with HNTB's Sophisticated Sales Approach (SSA). Works with the project team and marketing resources to prepare appropriate proposal and presentation materials. Leads proposal development and interview presentations for strategic and mini-mega projects to the client as well as general presentations within the industry and community.

    + May be responsible for the recruitment, hiring, development and retention of staff, including development of plan for staff reporting, performance and compensation reviews, and succession.

    + Typically responsible for management of project team(s) for one or more strategic (<$1M) projects, or may lead and/or work as a discipline lead on a mini-mega ($1M to <$5M) project management team.

    + Performs other duties as assigned.

    What You'll Need:

    + Bachelor's degree in Planning, Landscape Architecture, Urban Design, Engineering, Geology, Biology, Environmental Science, Anthropology, Archaeology, or related field and 8 years relevant experience

    + 2 years of task management or Deputy PM experience

    Primary Focus Will Be

    + Project and Major Task Management of traffic and transportation planning projects including development of scope, budget, schedule, and technical requirements.

    + Perform traffic modeling across a wide variety of projects utilizing software such as VISSIM, Synchro/SimTraffic, and HCS

    + Application of "Big Data" in Transportation Planning including the use of platforms such as SteetLight, Replica, NPMRDS, INRIX, and HERE

    + Management of safety analysis tasks utilizing Highway Safety Manual (HSM) methodology. Familiarity with the Interactive Highway Safety Design Model (IHSDM), the Enhanced Interchange Safety Analysis Tool (ISATe), and HSM spreadsheets.

    + Supervision of staff on project work

    + Ability to mentor and train junior staff

    + Excellent written and verbal communication skills

    + Preparation of supporting documentation such as memorandums and technical reports.

    + Participation in and coordination of public and stakeholder meetings and development of the public outreach process

    + Coordination with Local, State, and Federal Agencies

    + In addition to the tasks above, experience with the following is not required but a plus: Travel Demand Modeling, Dynameq, Scripting or coding with Python or VBS, Transportation Management Plan development, and Interchange Justification Reports.

    What You'll Bring:

    + Winning, contracting, and successfully delivering 4for4 (on-time, on-budget, quality, client satisfaction) on smaller projects. Identifying and escalating risk and change management issues, with oversight from more experienced staff.

    + Leading a team for a smaller project or task order with no or few subconsultants.

    + Using system tools to manage, monitor, and deliver smaller projects or task orders.

    + Leveraging the Office Management Team to assist in implementing HNTB Sophisticated processes as applicable to the project.

    + Interfacing with your client-level peer on a smaller project or task order.

    + Providing technical guidance to team and task leads as well as performing portions of the technical work.

    What We Prefer:

    + Master's degree in Business, Project Management, Landscape Architecture, Planning, Urban Design or related field.

    + American Institute of Certified Planner (AICP), Registered Landscape Architect (RLA), Registered Architect (RA), Certified Environmental Professional (CEP)

    + 10 years relevant experience
