  • Post Masters RA - Cell and Molecular Biology

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (Richland, WA)

    Apply Now

    Overview

The Earth and Biological Sciences Directorate (EBSD) leads novel and necessary research in three core areas: Atmospheric and Climate Sciences, Biological Sciences, and Environmental Molecular Sciences. The contributions of EBSD staff are many as we continue to elevate the impact of PNNL's science mission: to understand, predict, and control the complex adaptive systems underlying the science behind Earth, energy, and security.

    Responsibilities

The Microbial Molecular Phenotyping Group in the Environmental Molecular Sciences Division at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory seeks a versatile individual to conduct research in single-cell biology. This role emphasizes moving beyond species-resolved bulk analyses by enhancing the sensitivity and specificity of single-cell phenotyping using multi-omics platforms, emphasizing single-cell RNA sequencing. By employing innovative cell separation, molecular labeling, and signal amplification strategies, the researcher will focus on quantitative and dynamic measurements of specific biological outputs, including mRNA, protein, and metabolites, in individual cells. These efforts aim to elucidate how individual phenotypes shape the behavior of cell populations, microbial communities, and tissues.

The work will also involve integrating single-cell RNA sequencing with activity-based proteomics and mapping metabolic signatures to identify cell signaling and communication mechanisms. Additional areas of contribution include developing novel approaches to uncover structure-function relationships in multicellular systems and applying these techniques to lab-based model systems and natural microbial populations. Ideal candidates should have a strong background in molecular biology techniques and the ability to translate their findings into impactful advances in the field.

    Qualifications

    Minimum Qualifications:

+ Candidates must have received a Master’s degree within the past 24 months or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

    Preferred Qualifications:

+ MS in biology, biochemistry, or a related field.

+ Knowledge of single-cell sequencing and molecular-based activity studies applicable to prokaryotic systems is preferred.

+ Previous research experience in molecular studies and next-generation sequencing, along with sterile techniques as demonstrated by a solid publication record, is highly desirable.

+ The successful candidate will interact with other staff and participate in team-based collaborative research within PNNL and with external organizations. Therefore, strong written, oral, and interpersonal communication skills are essential to independently conduct experimental data analysis and present summaries to project managers and staff.

    Hazardous Working Conditions/Environment

+ Mild chemical hazards that are just typical lab chemicals like formaldehyde, ethanol, intercalating dyes, and BSL1/RG1 bacteria.

    Additional Information

+ This is an onsite only position.

    Testing Designated Position

This is not a Testing Designated Position (TDP).
