    Description of Job

    About the Position:

    This temporary Electronic Specialist II is located at our Colorado Springs location. This position will assist in the maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair for CDOT's traffic signals, ramp meters, and communication network throughout southeast Colorado.

    Your duties and responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

    + Maintain, test, troubleshoot, and repair electronic equipment used in signalized intersections, ramp meters, and communication systems.

    + Assist in developing, installing, and testing signal or ramp meter equipment, specifically being proficient with controllers and conflict monitors and specialized test equipment related to the traffic signal industry.

    + Assist with identifying equipment and timing related issues, replace faulty equipment and ensure the safe operation of these devices.

    + Set up, test, install, and troubleshoot cabinets and related equipment.

    + Assist in the initial investigation of reported operational issues by accessing traffic signal system and observing signal operations.

    + Assist in troubleshooting and repairing statewide electronics issues.

    + Communicate with internal and external stakeholders on signal and ramp meter related issues.

    + Inspect of various contractor led construction projects.

    + Provide utility locates, asset mapping, and assist in updating mapping database.

    + Assist in programming, installing, and maintaining school flashers.

    + Operate aerial device, backhoe, loader, trencher, concrete saw, other specialized equipment, hand, and power tools.

    Your Work Environment

     

    + Required to be on a rotating on-call schedule

    + Required to respond to emergencies outside regular work hours and work overtime, including weekends and holidays

    + Required to work on ladders and/or bucket trucks at heights from 10-80 feet

    + Occasional in-state/overnight travel

    + Frequent travel during workday for repair of equipment, training, and meetings in southeastern Colorado

    + Required to operate CDOT vehicles

    + Required to perform digging, trenching, lifting, pulling, carrying, other physical activities, and lifting up to 50 lbs.

    + Exposure to loud noises

    + Work around live electric, gas, water and other utility lines.

    + Exposure to fumes, odors, gases, dusts, etc. that may affect breathing, eyes, and skin

    + Exposure to High Voltage (anything over 600V) and electrical shock

    + Required to work in proximity to heavy traffic

    + Required to work in extreme temperatures, hot and cold, and weather conditions for long periods of time

    + Due to locations of some of the equipment, must be physically able to work at 11,000 feet in altitude.

     

    Minimum Qualifications, Substitutions, Conditions of Employment & Appeal Rights

    Minimum Qualifications

    + At least two years of technical experience maintaining, repairing, installing, modifying, calibrating, certifying, or fabricating electronics or communications equipment and devices.

     

    (Equipment and devices should primarily be in one or more of the following areas: telecommunications, video systems, wireless networks, fiber optics, radios, and/or Intelligent Transportation Systems.)

    Substitutions:

    + A combination of related education and / or relevant experience in electronics, electrical engineering, computer science, information technology or closely related, may be substituted for the required experience.     + Experience with power and hand tools, locating equipment, bucket truck and/or pole cat equipment operation.

    + Knowledge and understanding of the theories, principles, and best practices of digital and analog electronic theory, telecommunications, and computer wireless networks.

    + Knowledge and experience in installing, repairing, replacing, and troubleshooting a wide variety of electronic systems and equipment.

    + Knowledge and understanding of point-to-point, point-to-multi-point, microwave, and other wireless communications.

    + Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic handling, terminating, and splicing.

    + Knowledge and understanding of fiber optic transceivers and/or wireless transmitters and repeaters.

    + Knowledge and understanding of electronics and control programming.

    + Knowledge and understanding of ITS devices (e.g., variable message signs, close circuit TV, radar and/or weather stations).

    + Knowledge of DTE and DCE devices, as well as Telnet, CMD, Run, and HyperTerminal applications.

    + Familiarity with traffic signal control systems (e.g., Q-free and Kinetics).

    + Familiarity with the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) and work zone safety.

    + Ability to interpret and apply electronic schematics.

    + Proven ability to manage multiple assignments, priorities, and projects in a demanding environment.

    + Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner.

    + Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills.

    + Strong time and project management skills, including prioritization and project switching ability.

    + Excellent reasoning, investigative, analytical, and problem solving ability.

    Conditions of Employment

     

    + A current valid driver license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
