SUMMARY: Responsible for the organization, administration, supervision in the area of the school district transportation system in accordance with state law and policies along with school district policies.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONISBILITIES Other duties may be assigned.
+ Organizes and implements a pupil transportation system within the policies of the Board of Education.
+ Establishes bus routes both regular and special education
+ Works with bus drivers to approve bus stops in as safe a location as possible.
+ Makes recommendations that may improve transportation services and efficiency such as rules and regulations for drivers and pupil conduct.
+ Works with principals, parents, and bus drivers regarding scheduling, route problems, complaints and student code of conduct as it relates to student behavior on buses.
+ Interprets transportation procedure and regulations to the public and staff.
+ Interviews, recommends appointments, assigns, supervises and evaluates all transportation personnel.
+ Approves field trips and athletic trips for transportation and assures that drivers are assigned.
+ Verifies that a bus drivers is assigned to each bus activity request
+ Verifies that a sub bus driver is employed to cover the routes when necessary
+ Verifies that small vehicles have sufficient fuel for trips
+ Maintains records for preparation of state and local reports such as inventories, pupils transported, route mileage, time records, special trip records, traffic accidents and other required reports.
+ Maintain records on mileage of activity trips
+ Reasonable and suspicion drug and alcohol certified
+ Makes recommendations to the Superintendent regarding school closing/dismissal or hard surface routes based on road conditions.
+ Periodically checks the driving records of all bus drivers in order to assure student safety.
+ Posts notices of upcoming inservice courses
+ Verifies that bus drivers have obtained needed inservice training
+ Supervises and evaluates bus drivers and transportation personnel.
+ Set up with building principals and drivers for bi-annual bus evacuation drills
+ Assigns sub drives to cover bus drivers absences.
+ Work with new drivers to obtain their CDL.
+ Knowledge of all routes and ability to substitute all routes
+ Performs and/or coordinates repair and maintenance of all school owned vehicles.
+ Supervises and responds to Bi-Annual State Bus inspection through the Department of Education.13. Maintains the ability to diagnose, repair, rebuild and make all necessary adjustments to all vehicle systems.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manages subordinate bus drivers and sub/aide drivers, mechanic. Is responsible for the overall directions, coordination, and evaluation of these employees.
Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High School or GED. Experience in general transportation operations. Have at minimum Class B license with school bus and passenger endorsement with NO air break restrictions for two years.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the district.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest commissions, proportions percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situation where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, and diagram or schedule form.
OTHER SKILLS and ABILITIES:
Personal Computer and spreadsheet skills. Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in specific field. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the school community. Ability to speak clearly and concisely both in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
