The Custodial department at Farmingdale State College seeks to fill two Janitor positions. Janitors perform a variety of cleaning and unskilled maintenance tasks in assigned areas:

+ Collect and remove trash, recycling, organic waste, and hazardous or misplaced items from floors, furniture, and equipment; and dispose or place them in appropriate receptacles and locations.

+ Prepare, mix, and dilute cleaning solutions following manufacturer directions.

+ Wash floors, corridors, stairwells, walls, partitions, windows and other building surfaces, fixtures and equipment using mops, detergents, brushes, and other cleaning devices.

+ Vacuum, strip and wax floors, shampoo carpets and clean and maintain other flooring using manual or mechanical equipment.

+ Scrub and clean restrooms and showers, using hand-operated equipment and cleaning agents; maintain aerators for faucets and shower heads; and unclog toilets, traps, and sinks. Replace paper products and soaps as needed.

+ Replace lightbulbs, and dust or wash light fixtures and high places, such as ceilings, using ladders, other appropriate equipment and tools.

+ Polish wood and metal surfaces, fixtures, furniture and equipment.

+ Requisition and dispense cleaning supplies and equipment; and monitor and maintain inventories.

+ Install, replace, and repair building fixtures and decorative items, including shelves, doorknobs, curtains, blinds, and pictures.

+ Move and arrange furniture and equipment in connection with cleaning tasks or in preparation for meetings, events, operations needs and other activities.

+ Sweep, remove snow from and salt walkways; clean sidewalks, drives and yard areas; and landscape grounds, including mowing, trimming, raking and chemical application, using mechanical and manual equipment.

+ Perform basic and routine maintenance on mechanical and manual equipment used to perform the above tasks.

+ Report and recommend repairs and maintenance tasks requiring skilled trades work to supervisor.

+ Oversee the distribution, collection and storage of building keys or other security system access rights.

+ Utilize electronic systems for receiving and tracking work orders.

+ May provide training to lower-level cleaning staff.

Janitors supervise a group of a lower-level cleaning staff:

+ Assign tasks; provide instructions and assistance; demonstrate proper cleaning procedures; review work in progress and upon completion; monitor time and attendance; and evaluate performance.

Job Requirements:

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

There are no education or experience qualifications for this position. Incumbents must be physically able to perform the tasks of the position and communicate orally and in writing to exchange information.

+ Hiring procedures in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law.

+ Grade 7 Salary: $38,235 + $3,400 location pay = $41,635 Total Annual Compensation
