    Job Summary

    A Service Station Attendant (SSA) is tasked with servicing and preparing Fixed-Route, Paratransit, and other transit vehicles for the next day's route assignments. These duties include but are not limited to exterior and interior coach cleaning, fueling, adding necessary fluids, parking vehicles, coordinating with Operations and Fleet Maintenance staff, maintaining clean and orderly workspaces, and completing associated paperwork.

     

    To perform essential tasks listed below, the worker will ascend/descend the vehicle (steps and/or ramps) up to seven times per vehicle, servicing up to 60 vehicles per shift.

    Responsibilities*

    + Safely operate vehicles, including large transit coaches, and any equipment in a safe, professional manner at all times.

    + Coordinates with Garage Staff and Transit Supervision on daily work assignments, repairs, and other tasks.

    + Dispense fuel for automobiles, trucks, buses, and transit coaches.

    + Appropriately park vehicles as required or directed.

    + Clean the exterior of all transit vehicles, including operating the automatic and manual bus washes as required.

    + Clean vehicle interiors including all glass, dashboards, seats, floors, walls, and other surfaces using powered equipment and manually as needed.

    + Maintenance and regular cleaning of fueling & service stations, pumps, storage areas, and other facilities as required.

    + Inspect and perform minor maintenance/repairs on fueling and service facilities, including replacement of nozzles, hoses, and filters and inspect fuel tanks for content level and leaks, and maintain appropriate records.

    + Maintain daily records of gasoline, oil, diesel fuel, or other fluids that are dispensed.

    + Assist with minor repairs, aesthetic repairs when needed.

    + Depending on the weather, may be tasked with removal of snow and ice from ground or vehicles.

    + Assist with training of other staff.

    + Examine vehicles for damage or missing parts; compare against damage inventory records.

    + Inspect and perform minor maintenance on automatic vehicle wash equipment including repair/replacement of washing wands, hoses, nozzles, brushes, soap lines, and pump, and replenishing supplies related to said equipment.

    + Inspect all vehicle fluid levels, such as engine oil, transmission fluid, hydraulic oil, washer solvent, power steering fluid, DEF, coolant, etc., and refill as necessary.

    + Inspect tires for damage, wear, and air pressure.

    + Obtain/maintain University of Michigan lift truck license and operate mechanical/hydraulic lift.

    + Maintain supply of all necessary supplies in all fuel/fluids areas and other service areas at all Transit facilities.

    + Erect/dismantle various signages pertaining to transit services on route as well as those deemed necessary to be posted on bus/transit coach interiors.

    + Occasionally operate transit vehicles on public roadways for training purposes or to deliver or pick up coaches to and from other locations.

    + Operate pneumatic hoist and grease-gun to lubricate motor vehicles.

    + Change oil, oil filters, and air filters.

    + Inspect batteries for charge and adequate water levels; Replace loose or missing battery cables.

    + Replace windshield wiper blades and burnt out light bulbs.

    + Complete all required paperwork and maintain records of service performed on buses and transit coaches.

    Required Qualifications*

    Education:

    + High school diploma or GED equivalent

    Licensure & Certifications:

    + Must possess, and be able to maintain, a valid Drivers License. Applicants without a current, valid license will not be considered

    + Candidates must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B with Passenger Endorsement and no Airbrake restriction. Candidates must be able to maintain a valid Commercial Driver's License and endorsements as a condition of employment.

    + Must have an acceptable and appropriate driving record; No patterns of unsafe behaviors or safety violations; No major safety violations.

    + Ability to pass and maintain a valid DOT Medical Certificate; Candidates will be required to pass a DOT Medical Exam prior to hire.

    Preferred Relevant Experience:

    + Demonstrated responsible work experience of at least one (1) year in a similar field/position.

    + Demonstrated ability to handle large vehicles in confined areas.

    + Knowledge of or experience with basic vehicle maintenance/mechanics.

    + Knowledge of methods, tools, and equipment used in custodial/cleaning work.

    + Advanced knowledge of vehicle maintenance or custodial experience is preferred.

    Physical Requirements:

    + Must possess and maintain a valid DOT Medical Certificate; Candidates will be required to pass a DOT Medical Exam prior to hire.

    + Must adhere to the required DOT Drug and Alcohol program; Must pass a pre-employment DOT drug screen. Candidates will be subject to rules regarding Random, Post-Accident, and Reasonable Suspicion testing if hired.

    + Ability to adhere to all University/Departmental policies and procedures, as well as state and federal regulations that apply to the position.

    + Ability to move and maneuver materials weighing up to 50 pounds.

    + Staff must wear an employer provider uniform while on duty.

    + Essential and marginal duties require successful candidates to safely perform the essential duties of the position for 8+ hours per workday. Safely operate a transit vehicle, repeatedly board and exit a transit bus,repeatedly maneuvering in order to access various areas of the vehicle to perform thorough and complete maintenance of the vehicle, repeatedly accessing various materials or parts of the vehicle that are located close to the ground or several feet from the ground, moving/maneuvering materials of varying sizes and weights.

    + Ability to perform all of the essential and marginal duties of this position and remain alert and safety-focused at all times.

    + Successful candidates perform the majority of their duties outside in all weather conditions. Candidates will be exposed to various weather conditions during the course of their duties, including varying temperatures, snow, rain, ice, wind, sun, etc.

    Other Requirements:

    + Ability to accurately understand and interpret written and printed materials.

    + Ability to clearly communicate with transit staff and other entities; demonstrate knowledge of the Ann Arbor campus environment and map interpretation skills.

    + Ability to perform simple math.

    + Must be able to pass all required pre-employment screenings, including a background screening, pre-employment drug screening, and pre-employment medical exam.

    + Must be able to work varying shifts, hours, and days, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends; The University's Transit Service runs ~23 hours a day, 7 days a week.

    Work Schedule

     

    Full-Time: 40 Hours per week; Year-round position.

     

    Varied Hours - Afternoon Shifts.
