    UPMC Hamot is looking for a Patient Care Technician to support the Medical ICU!

     

    Title and starting pay rate of this position may vary based on years of experience.

     

    Patient Care Technician – Responsibilities

    Patient Care & Clinical Support

    + Assist patients with procedures and activities of daily living (ADLs), including bathing, feeding, toileting, ambulating, transporting, turning, and repositioning.

    + Support physical, respiratory, and cardiopulmonary therapies.

    + Provide feedback to the RN regarding patient care and report changes in patient status.

    + Apply, monitor, and remove patient restraints per physician orders or hospital protocols.

    + Provide patient and family instruction under the direction of the RN.

    + Perform core nursing assistant duties including:

    + Point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose)

    + Weights and vital signs

    + Intake and output (I&O) tracking

    + Telemetry monitor application/reapplication

    + Specimen collection

    + Foley catheter care and removal

    + Placement and removal of restraints

    + Bladder scanning

    + Simple dressings

    + "Ticket to Ride" transport readiness

    Advanced Clinical Skills (as required by department)

    + Phlebotomy and venipuncture

    + Peripheral IV catheter removal

    + Indwelling Foley catheter removal

    + 12-lead EKG

    + Basic arrhythmia recognition

    + NG tube clamping and removal

    Communication & Collaboration

    + Communicate clearly and effectively with all members of the healthcare team.

    + Demonstrate professionalism and respect in interpersonal relationships.

    + Establish effective communication with other departments.

    + Understand and respect cultural diversity and support a safe, inclusive workplace.

    Operational Support

    + Respond to call lights and telephones.

    + Pass meal trays and assist with patient feeding.

    + Transport patients safely and efficiently.

    + Complete department clerical functions as needed.

    + Report equipment malfunctions promptly.

    Professional Development

    + Receive feedback constructively and take initiative to improve performance.

    + Identify learning needs and seek guidance from the unit director.

    + Participate in self-reviews and contribute to quality improvement initiatives.

    Compliance & Documentation

    + Adhere strictly to hospital policies and safety protocols, including standard precautions.

    + Accurately document in the medical record according to established procedures.

    + Perform assigned duties in a timely and productive manner.

    Team Contribution & Initiative

    + Support changes and initiatives within the department.

    + Take responsibility for assignments and view challenges as opportunities for growth.

    + Contribute to efficient departmental operations through accountable and motivated behavior.

    Other Duties

    + Perform in accordance with system-wide competencies and behaviors.

    + Carry out other duties as assigned.

    Qualifications

    + High school diploma or equivalent.

    + Must meet one of the following experience/education requirements:

    + At least 1 year of general healthcare experience, OR

    + Minimum 6 months of experience as a UPMC Nursing Assistant/CNA, with Patient Care Technician (PCT) competency achieved within 120 days of hire, transfer, or promotion, OR

    + Enrollment in a PT, OT, PA, or related healthcare training program, with completion of at least one clinical rotation, OR

    + Bachelor’s degree in a health sciences field.

    Additional Requirements

    + Successful completion of the UPMC Patient Care Technician class.

    + Successful completion of basic information system training.

    + Microcomputer experience preferred.

    + Strong oral and written communication skills.

    + EMT or Paramedic certification or current enrollment in an accredited EMT or Paramedic program preferred.

    + Access to medications is limited to distribution to the nurse only.

    Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances

    + Basic Life Support (BLS) or Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification required (must meet AHA standards, including both didactic and skills demonstration components) within 30 days of hire.

    + Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred.

    + Act 34 Criminal Clearance required.
