Wireless Access Management (WAM) Engineer – Onsite (New York City, NY)

KeenLogic is hiring a Wireless Access Management (WAM) Engineer to support the Department of Education's enterprise wireless architecture. The Wireless Access Management (WAM) Engineer will collaborate with the integration vendor to ensure compliance with DIIT wireless network access policies and standards throughout the engineering and implementation phases of the WAM solution. This role will provide technical expertise in designing, configuring, deploying, and supporting wireless network solutions for schools and DOE’s enterprise network. The WAM Engineer will troubleshoot technical issues during implementation, manage progress reports, and escalate issues as needed.

This is a full-time position offering Fortune 500-level health/dental/vision, PTO, 401k, and Life Insurance.

Work Schedule: 35 hours per week. When feasible, work will be performed during administrative business hours (7:00 AM to 5:00 PM). However, site integrations typically take place after school hours from 2:30 PM onwards, and the candidate will be required to provide after-hours technical support.

Equipment: Candidates must bring their own laptop and cellphone. DOE does not provide equipment.

    Background and Purpose:

The DOE serves over 900,000 students annually, enabling educational success through technology, hardware, software, and telecommunications. The Division of Instructional and Information Technology (DIIT) is dedicated to supporting equity and excellence with minimal disruptions, ensuring that staff and students have access to the technology and resources necessary for high-quality education.

The CCU Project aims to enhance network infrastructure to create dynamic and engaging learning environments. As education evolves with online, remote, and blended learning, the demand for network upgrades increases. Initiatives like computer-based testing, the rise in mobile devices, and the one-to-one student-computer ratio require a robust infrastructure to support them.

Technological tools such as virtual classrooms, online learning platforms, and parent engagement apps are essential to achieving the Chancellor’s goals of Equity and Excellence, ensuring all students, parents, and teachers have equal access to education.

    Required Qualifications:

+ 7+ years of experience supporting daily operations in routing, switching, firewalls, wireless networks, and VPN technologies.

    + 7+ years of hands-on experience with Cisco Nexus and Catalyst Switches (6xxx, 5xxx, 4xxx, 29xx, 19xx), Cisco Routers (7500, 7200, 4000, 3600, 2600), Cisco VPN 3000, and related devices.

+ 7+ years of experience with hands-on configuration of Cisco switches (C9K, 68XX, 4XXX, 29XX), Cisco routers (C8XXX, ISR 29XX, ISR 4XXX), Cisco ASA 55XX firewalls, and Meraki MS devices.

+ 4+ years of experience working with large LAN/WAN infrastructures and knowledge of communication protocols, Cisco equipment, and networking technologies.

+ 2+ years of experience creating network diagrams, floor plans, and schematics using Visio.

+ 2+ years of experience responding to emergency calls in the evenings and on weekends for WAN/LAN outages.

+ Strong knowledge of networking standards for hardware and connectivity.

    + Detail-oriented and process-focused with strong problem-solving abilities.

    Job Duties:

+ Design Review & Implementation: Review and implement wireless network devices and connectivity for schools and DOE’s enterprise network.

+ Engineering Support: Support network infrastructure operations through coordination with internal support teams, ensuring continued optimal performance of the network infrastructure.

+ Network Hardware Compliance: Maintain compliance with defined architecture standards by ensuring all network infrastructure hardware aligns with DIIT standards.

+ Collaboration with Network Teams: Interface with WAN support, LAN support, network integrators, DOE network engineers, and classroom connectivity engineers to ensure proper placement of network hardware into the DOE enterprise topology.

+ Integration & Troubleshooting: Provide engineering-level 3 support during network infrastructure deployments, reviewing proposed work plan submissions, and ensuring they meet DIIT standards.

+ Configuration & Problem Resolution: Configure routers, switches, and firewalls to enable school data networks, providing related problem resolution as necessary.

+ Vendor Collaboration: Work with WAN carriers and ISP providers for data circuit provisioning and connectivity enablement. Lead efforts to resolve any connectivity issues.

+ Network Validation: Use DOE integration tools and the NOC Inventory Collection Engine (NICE) database to validate the As-Built submissions from vendors, ensuring compliance with DIIT network standards.

+ Network Management Tools: Utilize network management portals like vManage and Meraki Dashboard for monitoring and troubleshooting network issues.

+ Real-Time Support: Provide real-time support during equipment installations at school and administrative sites, including troubleshooting network and system issues.

+ Quality Assurance: Ensure consistent quality through the development and enforcement of automated tools, validating processes, and providing necessary documentation.

+ As-Built Verification: Validate and verify the network integrator's work, ensuring it adheres to DOE network standards.
