    General Description

    The Center for Law and Social Justice (CLSJ) at Medgar Evers College (MEC) seeks a Staff Attorney – Economic Justice who will play a key role in advancing CLSJ’s mission by combining legal expertise, advocacy, and community engagement to protect and promote voting rights. Specifically, the Staff Attorney will:

     

    + Represent CLSJ in legal matters and advance our criminal legal system reform efforts.

    + Support the development and implementation of the Esmeralda Simmons Pre-Law Preparatory Program , including program design, evaluation, and strategic recommendations.

    + Collaborate with CLSJ leadership to design and implement community outreach and education plans and engage Medgar students, individuals, organizations, and partners in support of the Center’s work.

    + Assist in planning and executing forums, conferences, and special events that promote CLSJ’s mission and priorities.

    + Participate in fundraising and development activities to sustain and expand the Center’s programs.

    + Other duties as assigned.

    Other Duties

    Qualifications

    + Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school

    + Licensed to practice law in New York State and in good standing

    + Minimum of three years of legal experience, including litigation in federal and state courts on civil rights or voting rights issues

    + Strong background in election law, redistricting, and voting rights advocacy

    + Experience working with community-based organizations or institutions preferred

    + Administrative and supervisory experience is a plus

    + Excellent research, writing, and public speaking skills

    The Research Foundation of The City University of New York (RFCUNY) is a nonprofit educational corporation founded in 1963 to provide post-award fiscal and administrative support for CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.     RFCUNY serves as a fiscal agent and works closely with all the CUNY campus Grants Offices to perform the core functions of post-award financial management for CUNY research projects and sponsored programs. These functions include legal assessment and signing of agreements where RFCUNY is named as a fiscal agent; setting up award accounts; preparing sub-awards and assisting PIs in monitoring the work of the recipients of sub-awards; supporting project directors with hiring and managing research project and sponsored program staff; supporting the purchasing and paying for goods and services with grant and program funds; managing financial aspects of projects including accounts receivable, financial reporting, invoicing, budget monitoring, and cost compliance with uniform guidance; ensuring that sponsor financial requirements are met; monitoring compliance with applicable project and financial management rules and laws; supporting the management of independent and external audits and financial reviews; and providing data, information, management expertise, and other supports to CUNY’s research and sponsored programs.
