    THE TEAM MEMBER WE ARE SEARCHING FOR:

    We are looking for an individual to fill the Supervising Orthopedic Technician position within the Department. The position is responsible for the administrative and technical supervision of orthopedic technicians providing a full-range of orthopedic services in inpatient and outpatient healthcare settings and for ensuring these services are rendered.

     

    Essential Job Functions

     

    + Provides first-level administrative supervision to orthopedic technicians in the unit, such as determining shift assignments and work locations, completing employee performance evaluations, authorizing time-off requests, and responding to first-level resolution of employee grievances.

    + Serves as a technical resource to technicians and medical staff on orthopedic devices.

    + Prepares the annual budget request for the unit by projecting, estimating and justifying staffing and equipment needs; and submits this to supervisors for approval.

    + Interviews and makes recommendations for the hiring of orthopedic technician personnel.

    + Makes daily rounds to evaluate the quality of orthopedic technician work at all assigned locations.

    + Consults with representatives of the biomedical section for the repair and modification of orthopedic equipment.

    + Plans and prepares curricula and materials subject to the approval of the director of orthopedics, for the training of technicians, trainees, interns, and resident physicians in the proper use of orthopedic procedures and devices; may conduct training in the more advanced areas.

    + Represents unit at nursing, medical and administrative meetings to discuss and/or resolve such matters as patient complaints, inter-discipline problems, procedural and policy determination.

    + Explains procedures to and guide patients and their families in the care of casts, strappings, dressings, orthotic/prosthetic devices, and/or traction modalities. Documents patient’s permanent medical record on all orthopedic procedures performed.

    + Makes decision on all needed orthopedic equipment based on written orders from providers written orders and a description of the patient's injury in the absence of supervisory personnel. Plans the best method and selects proper orthopedic devices and equipment using orthopedic manual and/or standard practice.

    + Maintains cast room and orthopedic equipment and devices. Checks examination room to ensure availability of proper equipment, medical record, or another appropriate document. Places orders in IRIS.

    + Assists providers and orthopedic surgeons in operating rooms and/or emergency areas by applying casts, tractions, and splints or applying more specialized orthopedic devices.

    Requirements

    MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

    Option I:

    Three (3) years of experience at the level of Orthopedic Technician* planning, fabricating, applying, adjusting and removing orthopedic devices, including plaster and soft casts, tractions orthotic/prosthetic modalities, and emergency splints,

    -OR-

    Option II:

    One (1) year of experience at the level of Senior Orthopedic Technician** providing technical oversight to other Orthopedic Technicians and planning, fabricating, applying, adjusting and removing orthopedic devices, including plaster and soft casts, tractions orthotic/prosthetic modalities, and emergency splints.

    LICENSE:

    A valid California Class C Driver License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions.

    PHYSICAL CLASS:

    Class III – Moderate: This class requires that the incumbent stand or walk most of the time with bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, reaching, working on irregular surfaces, occasional lifting of objects weighing over 25 pounds, and frequent lifting of 10-25 pounds.

    Desirable Qualifications:

    Additional credit will be awarded to applicants that possess the following desirable qualification(s):

    + Additional experience in excess of the Minimum Requirements.

    + Certificate of completion in orthopedic training program from an approved school/college.

    + Current American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

    *Experience at the level of Orthopedic Technician is defined as: apply and remove plaster and synthetic casts from patients and work in conjunction with a provider and works with a full range of orthopedic devices.

    **Experience at the level of Senior Orthopedic Technician is defined as: work with patients with orthopedic needs, work on difficult cases on a regular basis, serve as technical specialist, and provide guidance to orthopedic technicians, exercise independent judgment, assist in resolving complaints and grievances from staff, providers and the public, and refer serious matter to the supervisor.

    EXAMINATION CONTENT

    This examination will consist of an evaluation of training and experience based upon application information, desirable qualifications, and supplemental questionnaire, weighted 100%.

     

    Candidates must achieve a passing score of 70% or higher on the examination in order to be added on the eligible register.

    Eligibility and Vacancy Information:

    Applications will be processed as they are received and added to the register accordingly. Candidates who have passed the assessment are placed on a register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months. We will use this register to fill vacancies in the Department as they occur.

     

    No person may compete in this examination more than once every twelve (12) months.

    AVAILABLE SHIFT
