Description of Work Unit
As one of the nation’s top public research universities, Colorado State University ( CSU ) in Fort Collins, the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CIVE ) at CSU is recognized both nationally and internationally for its education, research, and service and outreach programs, and is ranked in the top 40 of such programs in the USA . The CEE Department consists of 36 tenured and tenure track faculty, 16research scientists/scholars, 27 research associates, and 11 administrative professionals. Position Summary
The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering ( CIVE ) at Colorado State University, is seeking a Research Associate-I to support geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering research, education, and professional development activities. This position is anticipated to be permanent. CSU is a land-grant institution with a strong commitment to research and education that impact society and address global problems. This is a full-time position with health and retirement benefits at our main campus in Fort Collins, CO.
This is an entry to mid-level professional and technical position in a research support capacity. In addition, the position will include opportunities to educate and train students at CSU as well as working professionals. The position is in support of active research, education, training, and service in the field of mine tailings engineering and mine residue management. The CIVE Dept. at CSU hosts the Tailings & Mine Waste Conference in Colorado, actively participates in the Tailings and Industrial Waste Engineering ( TAILENG ) Foundation, and is a member of the Tailings Center.
Required Job Qualifications
+ BS in Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Geological Engineering, or related field
+ Experience working in a laboratory with soils, mine tailings, and/or other industrial wastes
+ Must have a valid driver’s license or the ability to obtain a driver’s license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date
+ The successful candidate must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. by proposed start date; the CEE Department will not provide visa sponsorship for this position.
Preferred Job Qualifications
+ MS and/or work experience in advanced geotechnical and/or geoenvironmental engineering laboratory
+ Experience with design, fabrication, operation, and control of novel test equipment
+ Experience with educating, training, and mentoring students or colleagues

+ Conduct geotechnical and geoenvironmental characterization experiments (e.g., particle size analysis, plasticity limits, specific gravity, cation exchange capacity, swell, shrinkage, etc.) on soils, mine tailings, and other industrial wastes;
+ Conduct geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering behavior experiments (e.g., direct shear, interface shear, triaxial, hydraulic conductivity, consolidation, soil moisture retention, column tests, etc.) on soils, mine tailings, and other industrial wastes;
+ Contribute to the design, construction, operation, and computer control of novel laboratory experiments;
+ Analyze data and prepare technical reports that include the aforementioned experiments
