*General Description:*
Full-time remote position that serves as a vital member of the Claims Department of the Texas Veterans Commission. Position will oversee the Waco VA Region of Texas. Performs moderately complex to complex claims assistance to incarcerated veterans and their dependents. Works with jail/prison staff, veterans, dependents, attorneys, judges, counselors, and social workers to assist with VA disability claims. Work involves receiving and processing mail from veterans, processing disability claims, traveling to jails and prisons. Person will need to attend Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) volunteer workshop within the first year of employment. Works under limited supervision, with moderate latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Works closely with the other TVC Justice Involved Coordinator.*To promote a strong environment, TVC maintains a telecommuting policy. The policy is decided by division and contingent on continued performance.*
*Essential Duties and Responsibilities:*
• Oversees the work and activities of a single person office.
• Maintains USPS PO Box in city which JIV Coordinator resides.
• Prepares incarcerated veterans claims and supporting evidence for successful adjudication.
• Plans and coordinates with facilities within Waco RO sector to visit incarcerated veterans.
• Consults with VA and 3rd party medical staff coordinating evidence for benefits.
• Attends VA Treatment Court (VTC) and when appropriate work with VTC Coordinator.
• Maintains casework standards and caseload control.
• Assists with development and initiation of training programs for TVC District trainings.
• Consults and trains staff concerning incarcerated veteran claims work and related problems.
• Prepares or assists in the preparation of administrative reports, studies, and specialized projects.
• Provides testimony to legislators when requested.
• Provides technical assistance to staff and agency partners to ensure the efficient and effective operations of the JIV program.
• Serves as agency liaison to other agencies concerned with veteran rights and responsibilities.
• Works with and speaks to jail/prison administration staff to ensure veterans have access to JIV.
• Develops and recommends program guidelines, procedures, policies, rules, and regulations, and monitors compliance with policies and procedures.
• Prepares written briefs as requested by HQ.
• Participates in the development of program goals and objectives.

*Minimum Education:*
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in social work, business management, political science, or a related field. Experience may be substituted for education on a year for year basis.*College Transcripts are required and must be provided before an interview can be extended, it is preferred they be attached to the application.*
*Minimum Experience:*
Minimum of three years (3) experience working in the Criminal Justice System, conducting Investigations (civil, workplace, or other), and/or managing benefit claims.
*Additional Requirements:*
A valid Texas Driver’s License must be provided within 90 days of hire.
*Preferred Qualifications and Experience:*
• Honorably discharged veteran.
• Experience in filing benefit claims with the Department of Veteran Affairs.
*Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:*
• Knowledge of and ability to interpret VA laws, regulations, and the claims process.
• Skill in identifying measures or indicators of program and staff performance and in operating a computer and applicable software.
• Ability to provide exceptional customer service in stressful environments.
• Ability to interview veterans inside penal institutions.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to gather, assemble, correlate, and analyze facts, to devise solutions to problems; to prepare concise reports; to develop and evaluate policies and procedures.

*Environmental & Physical Conditions: *
Normal office work environment, mostly sedentary in nature. May involve walking; standing; remaining stationary for long periods of time; pulling and pushing; kneeling, stooping, and bending; and safely lifting and carrying items weighing up to 30 pounds. Work involves extensive telephone usage and repetitive hand/wrist/finger motions while using the computer.
