Primary Health Care (PHC) was founded in 1981 by Dr. Bery Engebretsen in Des Moines, IA. Our mission has remained unchanged since that time, to provide healthcare and supportive services to all, regardless of insurance, immigration status, or ability to pay.
Based on the needs of the communities we serve, PHC offers a spectrum of medical and dental services including family practice, behavioral health, HIV care and services, and pharmacy. PHC’s Homeless Support Services is the entry point for serving people experiencing homelessness in Polk County. Enabling services are available to help patients with benefits enrollment, case management, transportation, translation, and patient education. We currently have locations in Ames, Des Moines, & Marshalltown.
As a Medical Records Specialist, you will be responsible for retrieving and filing medical records, maintaining the order of the medical record, filing reports and documents in the electronic medical record, and receiving and processing requests for information from the medical records. Assists supervisor with HIPAA activities. Demonstrates PHC’s iCare Values in daily work.

What You Will Do
+ Receives and processes requests for patient health information in accordance with organizational policies and procedures. Scans and indexes patients’ records to the electronic medical record. Maintains and processes incoming e-fax files. Responds to medical record audit requests from insurance companies, law firms, and other entities as appropriate.
+ Responsible for pre-loading of labs and radiology as defined in PHC’s minimum preloading standards.
+ Creates invoices to attain payment from agencies requesting medical records.
+ Retrieves and files paper patient medical records, onsite or offsite, as necessary.
+ Remains up to date on medical records compliance requirements. Keeps supervisor and appropriate staff informed of compliance issues and completes all documentation requirements accurately and concisely.
+ Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications You Need to Bring
Required:
+ High School Diploma or GED.
+ A minimum of 1 year of experience in a medical office setting.
+ Familiarity with medical terminology.
+ Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to communicate effectively, verbally and written.
+ Proficiency with computers including Microsoft applications, including Word and Excel
+ Exceptional customer service skills.
+ Analytical and problem-solving skills.
+ Working knowledge of HIPAA.
+ Able to work independently and consistently meet deadlines and schedules as designated.
+ Able to work effectively with diverse groups.
Preferred:

Your experience and skills determine your base pay. The hiring range for this position is typically $14.15 - $17.69 per hour/annually. Candidates with extensive work experience related to this position may be considered for additional compensation up to the pay grade maximum of $21.23 per hour/annually.
