    Job Summary

    Reporting to the Director of UM-Flint EHS, Your role will involve on-campus work, inspections of work areas, shops, studios and laboratories, communications with area managers and staff to support their respective compliance with university guidelines and regulatory requirements. You will work in collaboration with campus partners to make recommendations and follow up to verify the implementation of corrective actions.

    Responsibilities*

    Research Regulatory requirements, Review & Update Programs and Plans

    + Remain current on rules/regulations related to environmental health and occupational safety and best practices that go beyond compliance but are proactive and sustain the Campus Culture of Safety and Preparedness.

    + Review and revise select safety and health programs as directed by the EHS Director. Improve supporting safety and health program materials.

    + Review and work with partners in maintaining health and safety compliance programs, posters, support materials, website, and other campus health and safety resources.

    Inspections and Equipment Testing/Training

    + Support the University's Laboratory, Studio, and Shop Safety Programs through inspections, education/marketing, and program documentation.

    + Evaluate work spaces for compliance with university health and safety requirements, summarize findings for the Director, meet with partners to discuss findings and improve compliance.

    + Inspect campus buildings and life safety equipment to evaluate conditions, placement, and compliance. Maintain written documentation of inspections and summary reports.

    + Provide employee and student training, safety and health guidance information and feedback on unit specific program documents.

    + Develop/maintain equipment tags and guidance, assist departments to do the same to assist with compliance.

    + Routine calibration of EHS air monitoring equipment. Check to ensure operation and send in for maintenance.

    + Coordinate the monitoring, program support and assistance with respective departments compliance with cranes, AEDs, and lasers.

    Hazardous and Regulated Waste Management

    + Inspections of waste storage areas and containers

    + Develop and distribute regulated waste educational and support materials and training/reference materials

    + Coordinate regulated waste collections on campus.

    + Assist departments with environmental compliance not limited to proper indoor and outdoor storage, disposal and protection of environment i.e. storm drains and surface water.

    + Respond to hazardous material spills and coordinate response with other EHS staff, and when appropriate other departments and their staff. Receive and maintain HAZWOPER training & certification to at least the ?technician level?.

    EHS Website Review and Enhancements

    + Review and maintain EHS website pages and links

    + Coordinate with others in EHS and other departments to post EHS info on campus digital signs

    Chemical Inventory and Reconciliation

    + Assist departments with maintaining chemical inventories and complying with chemical use/storage requirements. Includes monitoring and reconciling campus chemical inventory with actual materials found in departments.

    + Complete annual SARA Title III EHS and Tier II Reporting for UM-Flint

    + Annually review and assess DHS COI on campus

    Job Hazard Evaluations and PPE Assessments

    + Coordinate & complete job hazard evaluations and personal protective equipment (PPE) assessments for select departments.

    + Conduct health and safety training workshops to students and employees relevant to safe working practices, etc.

    + Work with Facilities & Operations, Marketing and Communications, and other units to communicate with campus emails, digital signage, pamphlets, informational bulletins, webpages, bulletin boards providing relevant health and safety related information and updates.

     

    Other Duties may be assigned by the EHS Director as deemed necessary for operational needs of the EHS department

    Required Qualifications*

    + Bachelor's degree in a science-related field, such as health, biology, chemistry, environment/public health or related field.

    + 5 or more years of experience in environmental health and occupational safety or related field.

    + Demonstrated understanding of environmental health and occupational safety principles and the regulatory requirements.

    + Knowledge and ability of responding to emergency situations requiring completion HAZWOPER training/certification and ability to wear respirator required.

    + Demonstrated knowledge and competency in safe chemical and biological laboratory operations and principles.

    + Demonstrated proficiency in Google products and Microsoft Windows

    + Demonstrated customer service competencies.

    Modes of Work

     

    Onsite

     

    The work requires, or the supervisor approves a fully onsite presence. Onsite is defined as a designated U-M owned or leased work location within or outside of the State of Michigan.

     

    Positions that are eligible for hybrid or mobile/remote work mode are at the discretion of the hiring department.
