Responsibilities:
GENERAL PURPOSE
Assists Gross Room leadership with the daily operations of the gross room, including performing the duties of a pathologists' assistant, assisting in the training and teaching of staff, residents, and students. Provides grossing support as needed. Assists with the QA/QC and maintenance of policies and procedures. Serves as the Supervisor of the Gross Room in the absence of leadership
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
+ Keeps current on advances in the field, evaluates opportunities for improvement and implements changes as appropriate. Confers with leadership concerning operations. Maintains staff schedule to ensure assignments and duties are covered. Seeks out opportunities to improve the efficiency of laboratory by regularly evaluating instrumentation and work processes and making recommendations for implementation as needed. Oversees the daily workflow of the area to ensure workflow efficiency, and provides technical guidance as needed. Recommends and participates in the continuing education and career development of staff and residents. Works with the leadership to ensure adequate support to the department.
+ Maintains technical ability and performs duties as a Pathologists’ Assistant. Dictates a gross description, including the color, consistency, weight, and measurements of specimen, as well as a description of any abnormalities or unusual findings. Performs the necessary dissection of the specimens received while maintaining positive patient identification, which involves the proper cutting of specimens and appropriate submission of tissue for microscopic examination with regard to disease process and clinical history. Consults with attending pathologist/fellow on complex or unusual specimens.
+ Establishes, revises, and communicates effective laboratory policies and procedures that are in compliance with hospital policy and procedures. Ensures lab/section staff comply with policies and procedures. Ensures area is inspection ready at all times. Works collaboratively with laboratory and section supervisors to integrate and synchronize laboratory operations. Works with faculty and resident leadership to provide support the educational mission of the institution. Supports laboratory and section, departmental and organizational strategic initiatives. Performs Quality Assurance and Quality Control tasks as needed.
+ Acts as a lead and oversees the technical and professional performance of all staff working in the gross room, including working with leaders to manage the shared staff. Provides input into performance evaluations and provides counsel and constructive feedback to develop employees. Assists with recruitment, hiring, orientation, transfers, promotions, disciplinary actions, and terminations in accordance with organizational and departmental policies and procedures.

M **INIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
+ A degree from an accredited Pathologists Assistant program and previous experience in a lead role required
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience
LICENSES AND CERTIFICATIONS
+ NYS License as a Pathologists Assistant upon hire required
+ ASCP - American Society of Clinical Pathologist certification as a Pathologist Assistant upon hire required
