    Description

    Boulder Scientific Company (BSC) is headquartered in Mead, CO, and is a premier provider of organometallic compounds and other specialty chemicals used in a wide range of applications. BSC is a pioneer and leading manufacturer of metallocene catalysts and co-catalysts that are primarily used to produce metallocene polyethylene, polypropylene and elastomers,but also supplies products into Electronics, Pharmaceutical and Defense applications.BSC operates two sites in Northern Colorado, which include: a main production facility in Mead and a second facility in Longmont. BSC has continuously grown the sales of its products to existing and new customers and expects to continue on a high growth trajectory.

     

    We are looking for a skilled Process Design Engineer to lead the design of manufacturing processes and equipment, implement automation, and manage projects within our batch production of specialty chemicals and related products. This role involves enhancing existing manufacturing operations and supporting the company’s growth through innovative process design. The ideal candidate should exhibit strong interpersonal and communication skills, a solid work ethic, and the ability to thrive both independently and as part of a cross-functional team to help achieve the company’s goals and objectives.

    Job Responsibilities

    Process Design Engineer II

    + Delivers engineering and technical expertise to support Production, Research & Development, Business Development, and Pilot Plant operations as required

    + Process Design Engineer II is responsible for leading and independently executing capital projects up to $50K, from initial concept through successful completion. Key duties include:

    + Define detailed project scopes and develop project charters

    + Prepare Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs), Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs), and General Arrangement (GA) drawings

    + Develop bills of materials and prepare capital budgets

    + Perform engineering design calculations and generate specifications for process equipment, including batch reactors, storage vessels, heat exchangers, receivers, piping systems, and instrumentation

    + Maintain thorough documentation and ensure clear, regular communication with project stakeholders and leadership

    + Coordinate with contractors, vendors, and internal maintenance teams to ensure proper installation and execution of projects

    + Support project commissioning and start-up activities to ensure seamless handoff to operations

    + Develop control philosophies and automation logic for new and upgraded systems

    + For capital projects exceeding $50K, collaborate with senior design engineers and project managers to support successful project delivery

    + Provide technical expertise and perform engineering calculations to support regulatory and safety compliance

    + Contribute to process optimization, facility improvements, and maintenance initiatives

    + Assist in start-up and commissioning efforts; develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

    + Stay informed on relevant environmental and safety regulations, as well as industry best practices

    + Develop a strong working knowledge of BSC's manufacturing processes, products, equipment, and facilities

    + Assist in troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to drive continuous improvement across systems and processes

    + Support plant personnel in identifying and implementing corrective actions for operational challenges

    + Propose and execute initiatives aimed at reducing manufacturing costs, increasing capacity, and enhancing product quality to support operational profitability

    + Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing learning, skill development, and performance improvement

    + Train operators on the safe and effective use of new and existing equipment and processes

    + Supervise operators, contractors, and maintenance staff as needed in relation to engineering projects

     

    Process Design Engineer III

    All duties and responsibilities of the Process Design Engineer II

    + Process Design Engineer III is responsible for leading and independently executing capital projects up to $100K, from initial concept through successful completion

    + Lead start-up and commissioning efforts; develop and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

    + Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis to drive continuous improvement across systems and processes

    + Apply advanced automation technologies, such as sequence programming, in process design; implement modifications to existing PLC systems to enhance performance and efficiency

    Qualifications

    Process Design Engineer II

     

    Minimum Bachelor's degree in BS Chemical Engineering and at least 3 years of industry experience with batch and/or continuous operations in specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or related field. Candidates with higher degree (MS, PhD) with less years of industry experience will be considered.

     

    Process Design Engineer III

     

    Minimum Bachelor's degree in BS Chemical Engineering and at least 5 years of industry experience with batch and/or continuous operations in specialty chemicals, pharmaceuticals, or related field. Candidates with higher degree (MS, PhD) with less years of industry experience will be considered.

    Experience

    + Strong mechanical reasoning skills with familiarity in key processes, including filtration, distillation, and batch reaction.

    + Proven expertise in the following technical areas: fluid dynamics, thermodynamics, distillation principles, process control, organic and inorganic chemistry, mass transfer, materials of construction, equipment specification, Process Safety Management, and ASME/API code compliance.

    + Experience with P&ID development using AutoCAD is preferred.

    + Practical knowledge of PLC-based process control is highly desirable.

    + Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification is strongly encouraged.

     

    Work Environment

     

    While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to Colorado weather conditions and manufacturing plant environment. Will be in manufacturing and lab environments that require the appropriate use of PPE.

     

    Employee may be required to work hours other than their usual schedule; may be required to be on-call or available at odd hours and weekends to support manufacturing startups and continuously-running processes.
