Summary
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Solid Waste Department is responsible for the proper management of solid waste generated in Deschutes County. The Department operates Knott Landfill and four rural transfer stations where the public, contractors and waste collection companies deliver waste for disposal at Knott Landfill in Bend.

ABOUT THE JOB:
As a Solid Waste Equipment Operator, you will have the opportunity to contribute to the safe and efficient operation of what is considered one of the best landfill operations in the State of Oregon. The Solid Waste Department operates a modern fleet of trucks and heavy equipment including two and three axle trucks and semi-trucks, a variety of medium to large size loaders, excavators, bulldozers, paddle-wheel scrapers and solid waste compactors. Knott Landfill is a dynamic work environment where conditions often change throughout the work day. Equipment operators work a 4 day/10 hour schedule. While individual employee work schedules vary due to the nature of our facility operating schedules, all employees get at least two days in a row off during their work week.
Must be able to work additional hours and a flexible schedule when needed, including evenings, weekends, and holidays, to meet the needs of the department and emergencies.
Key Responsibilities:
+ Safe operation of trucks and heavy equipment in all tasks assigned, including excavation, material hauling and waste placement operations.
+ Safe management of public traffic and waste handling in an enclosed transfer station building.
+ Care and general maintenance of vehicles, heavy equipment and landfill facilities.
What You Will Bring:
Knowledge of or experience with:
+ Experience and skills in heavy equipment operation.
+ Ability to perform general equipment care and maintenance tasks.
+ Basic knowledge of occupational hazards and safety practices.
Skill in:
+ Working in a cooperative team environment including working with site attendants and other equipment operators to achieve daily goals and objectives in a safe and efficient manner.
+ Interact with the public in a positive and professional manner at all times.

Compensation

$4,260.05 to $5,437.12 per month for a 173.33 hour work month.
PW Equipment Operator, Heavy
$4,931.60 to $6,294.13 per month for a 173.33 hour work month.
Excellent County benefit package when eligible. These union-represented positions are available immediately.

Minimum Qualifications

+ High school diploma or GED equivalent;
+ AND one (1) year of relevant experience;
+ OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.

+ OR any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills and knowledge to perform the essential functions of the job.
+ Must be in possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License.
Placement dependent upon qualifications.
Preferred Qualifications:
+ Current CDL License
Necessary Special Requirements
Driving is a requirement for this position. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license within 30 days of hire date. The employment offer will be contingent upon presentation of an acceptable and verifiable driver's license, pre-employment screening for criminal history, driving history, and controlled substances (NOTE: Positive test results for marijuana use may result in rescission of a contingent offer of employment). This screening must be completed with satisfactory findings in order for a formal offer of employment to be extended.
Ability to drive all County equipment and vehicles on roads. Must be able to drive and travel with equipment within city, county and public roadways, sometimes in adverse weather conditions.
Physical Requirements.
Must have sufficient ambulatory ability to perform the following:
+ Balancing, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, twisting, bending, stooping, flexing, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions.
+ Operating and driving equipment on even and uneven surfaces, inside and outside, and manipulating auxiliary controls.
+ Getting in and out of trucks and heavy equipment, and walking on uneven terrain
+ Manipulate hand tools, rakes, hammers, commercial brooms, stakes, hoses, chains and other objects.
+ For medium work: exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly, to move objects.
+ For heavy work: exerting from 50 to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and up to 25 pounds of force constantly, to move objects.
Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, chemicals, extreme temperatures, intense noises, wet/icy surfaces, heights, glare, vibration, and hazardous waste/agents.
