    Phlebotomist

    Job Description

    The primary role of a phlebotomist is to assist in performing various assigned duties, troubleshooting, training, and making workflow recommendations. This position involves collecting and storing specimens according to established procedures and explaining the process of venipuncture or other specimen collections such as urine or fecal samples in a clear and courteous manner. The phlebotomist will demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles, fully understand physicians' orders, and match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

    Responsibilities

    + Experience in blood draws, labeling specimens, centrifuging specimens, recording maintenance data, decontamination, and updating patient information.

    + Collect and store specimens according to established procedures.

    + Properly explain the process of venipuncture and other specimen collections to patients.

    + Demonstrate techniques using straight needles and butterfly needles.

    + Fully understand all physicians' orders.

    + Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes.

    + Label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test order.

    + Check all test requisitions or computer labels against scripts to ensure accuracy.

    + Package specimens for transport.

    + Store specimen samples according to required temperature and place samples in appropriate collection containers or tubes.

    + Accurately label and follow procedures necessary for transport to maintain specimen integrity.

    + Understand and comply with OSHA and DEP regulations.

    + Attend annual department trainings.

    + Answer telephone calls and read laboratory results to satisfy inquiries.

    Work Environment

    This role is based at a Patient Service Center, where the candidate will be responsible for drawing blood as well as running drug screens, biometrics, and paternity tests. The work hours are from 8 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday, within a team of 2-3 phlebotomists. Expect to handle 30 to 40 draws a day, including pediatric patients.

    Pay and Benefits

    The pay range for this position is $17.00 - $17.97/hr.
