+ $20,000 sign-on bonus available for nurses with over one year of experience
+ $15,000 sign-on bonus available for graduate nurses
Observation/Short Stay Acute Care Unit** **: 3 South is a 23 bed unit that provides patient care following failed outpatient treatment, unsuccessful condition improvement from the Emergency Department or care following procedures. These adult, medical-surgical patients require ongoing stabilization of care, reassessment for discharge or admission to the hospital. Examples of this patient population include but are not limited to: low level trauma, ambulatory dysfunction, low-risk chest pain, respiratory complaints, post-surgical patients, and infusions.

**Overview:** The Senior Professional Staff Nurse is a Registered Nurse who plays a key leadership role within the care delivery team. This position is responsible for setting and upholding high standards of nursing care, ensuring quality and consistency. With full responsibility, authority, and accountability, the Senior Professional Staff Nurse oversees patient care for a designated group, using independent judgment and effective communication. The role emphasizes leadership, collaboration, and supervision, fostering strong partnerships with physicians, healthcare providers, patients, and families to achieve optimal outcomes across the care continuum. Additionally, the nurse demonstrates a strong commitment to both the community and the nursing profession.
Responsibilities:
+ Applies the nursing process using Relationship Based Care to foster a healing environment. Develops daily patient goals and care plans that are holistic and patient centered.
+ Communicates effectively, translating patient conditions and advocating for care improvements. Maintains thorough documentation to support caregiver communication.
+ Uses critical thinking to assess clinical, social, safety, psychological, and spiritual needs. Aligns daily work with professional, unit, and health system goals to enhance safety, quality, and patient satisfaction.
+ Builds compassionate relationships with patients, families, and colleagues. Identifies and acts on opportunities for clinical and workplace improvement using evidence-based practice.
+ Leads or participates in teams that innovate patient care and promote workforce wellness. Passionately mentors students, new nurses, and peers, fostering continuous learning and development.
+ Seeks feedback and engages in ongoing professional growth. Shares knowledge through presentations, journal clubs, and professional resources.
+ Serves as a role model and leader in clinical expertise, teaching, and evidence-based practice. Provides constructive feedback and engages in peer review.
+ Promotes positive change in patient care and the work environment. Participates in shared governance and hospital-wide initiatives.

+ Requires a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience; BSN is highly preferred.
+ Demonstrates age-appropriate care by applying knowledge of growth and development across the lifespan and interpreting patient data to meet age-specific needs per department policies.
+ Promotion to this level requires a Solid/Strong/Good or higher rating on the Professional Staff Nurse Performance Evaluation, which must be maintained annually.
+ Must build and sustain positive, compassionate relationships with all levels of staff, patients, and families.
+ Capable of functioning effectively in complex environments with shifting priorities and specialized equipment.
+ Exhibits strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills in patient care.
+ Must possess physical stamina, mobility, and manual dexterity for frequent patient handling.
+ Completion of professional contributions aligned with department or system goals is required annually.
+ Must obtain and maintain a UPMC-approved nursing certification within one year of hire/transfer unless holding a master's in nursing or DNP; a Master’s in a related field may substitute for certification if a BSN is held.
Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:
+ Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) within one year of hire or transfer.
+ Basic Life Support (BLS) OR Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire.
+ NIH Stroke Scale (NIH) within 6 months of hire or transfer.
+ Registered Nurse (RN) current licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse either in the state where the facility is located or in a state covered by a licensure compact agreement with the state where the facility is located.

+ UPMC approved nursing certification preferred.
*Current licensure either in the state where the facility is located or, if the facility is in a state covered by the multistate Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC) agreement, a multistate license issued by a participating NLC state. Hires and current employees working on an out-of-state NLC license who later change their residency to the state where the facility is also located will have 60 days upon changing their residency to apply for licensure within that state.
