The NYU Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools is a research and professional learning services center that supports equity-focused, evidence-based innovations in educational research and programming. We operate as a complex collective of multiple sub-units with different areas of specialization.

NYU Metro Center’s work falls into five categories: 1) technical assistance to districts and schools; 2) professional learning to teachers and leaders; 3) applied research and evaluation of district and school programs; 4) scholarly research conducted by NYU Metro Center researchers and NYU faculty affiliates; and 5) youth development programs including college readiness, youth-led advocacy and organizing, and youth participatory action research. NYU Metro Center has a history of experience providing assistance and mobilizing resources to address a variety of issues related to educational inequity, segregation, disproportionality, discrimination of all kinds, and social injustice.

The Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools (NYU Metro Center) at New York University seeks a qualified candidate for the role of FT Digital Campaign Organizer working with the Education Justice Research and Organizing Collaborative (EJ-ROC). EJ-ROC provides critical research, data, policy and strategic support to the education justice movement. We maximize the synergy between research and community organizing, magnify the voices and power of grassroots communities of color, and advance the capacity of organizing efforts to make demands, design solutions, ensure quality implementation, and sustain policy wins.

The NYU Metro Center is partnering with the Alliance to Reclaim Our Schools to lead a national communications & organizing campaign to defend and advance public education at the federal level by growing a people-driven education justice movement with a strategic focus on geographies and constituencies that can stop privatization and secure federal funding for public schools.

We are seeking a FT Digital Campaign Organizer to support the field in the following ways:

+ Work with local community-based organizations, parents, school board members and other local community activists to create and advance local plans to activate and build public support for public schools

+ Use online platforms to find public school supporters in targeted geographies and build their leadership to take action for public education

+ Plan and execute in-person mobilizations to protect and defend public education, such as press conferences, birddogging, meetings with electeds, etc.

+ Plan and execute large digital mobilizations such as phone and text banking, call-in days, social media storms, mass meetings and other tactics

+ Develop the leadership of local parent and community activists for public education, to develop local formations to drive campaigns for public education

+ Pilot a distributed organizing approach to organize volunteers, teams and supporter groups to take online and offline actions

+ Work collaboratively with multiple local, state and national organizations to develop, align and execute strategy and campaign plans.

Position Summary

The Digital Campaign Organizer organizes online and on-the-ground communities of public school supporters to take visible, meaningful action to protect and defend public education.

This a temporary full-time position for six months, with a possible extension depending on funding. Principal Responsibilities

[60%] Work with local community-based organizations, parents, school board members and other local community activists to create and advance local plans to activate and build public support for public schools

[25%] Develop the leadership of local parent and community activists for public education, to develop local formations to drive campaigns for public education

[15%] Work collaboratively with multiple local, state and national organizations to develop, align and execute strategy and campaign plans.

Supervisory Duties

This position does not include any supervisory responsibilities.

In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $65,000 - $75,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate is, first and foremost, committed to our organizational mission and vision and reflects the following Qualifications:

+ Required Experience:

+ 3+ years of experience working on social justice campaigns

+ Experience with online organizing, digital strategies as well as grassroots community organizing

+ Experience organizing in politically conservative communities or states, or with bipartisan community groups

+ Strong grounding and experience with the essentials of community organizing: outreach and base-building, campaign planning, leadership development, direct action, media, etc

+ Required Knowledge, Skill, and Abilities:

+ Ability to manage multiple projects and timelines independently and effectively

+ Demonstrated commitment to justice and liberation for historically marginalized people

+ Cultural competency that includes strong understanding and experience with dynamics related to race, gender, ability, language, immigration, socioeconomics

+ Excitement and readiness to experiment with new strategies and tactics that can advance education justice in the current political landscape

+ Working knowledge of public education issue preferred
