The Department of Comparative Medicine at Stanford University is seeking a Veterinarian toadminister appropriate veterinary care to all animals in the Stanford research colonies, and make critical health care decisions in a wide variety of situations. Comparative Medicine is a distinct discipline of medicine that uses animal models of human and animal disease in translational and biomedical research. Our mission is to advance human and animal health through outstanding research, veterinary care, and training.

    Duties include:

    + Perform veterinary care physical exams, diagnostic work-ups, medical or surgical treatment, and/or euthanasia, for all species found in the research colony populations.

    + Ensure accuracy of clinical records in compliance with state and federal regulations.

    + Provide expert care in the areas of preoperative, intraoperative and postoperative care of research animals.

    + Participate in clinical and didactic training of residents, interns, and visiting veterinary students.

    + Assist with reviewing animal use proposals for the Administrative Panel on Laboratory Animal Care, and coordinate the monitoring of approved research projects.

    + Provide assessments of animals prior to intrastate, interstate, and international shipments, including physical examination, review of colony history, and pertinent diagnostic tests.

    + Supervise other workers, as assigned.

    DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

    EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

    Graduate of School of Veterinary Medicine with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Veterinary Medical Doctor (VMD) degree required, and one year of relevant experience.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

    Advanced knowledge of the veterinary sciences to provide and ensure quality care for research animals under experimental procedures or requiring medical care.

    CERTIFICATIONS & LICENSES:

    Board eligible or Board certified in a pertinent veterinary specialty. Veterinarian license from at least one state.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    + Frequently stand/walk, use a computer, and write by hand.

    + Occasionally sitting, reach/work above shoulders, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, grasp forcefully, twist/bend/stoop/squat, use a telephone, and restrain large animals.

    + Rarely climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), kneel/crawl, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 21-40 pounds.

    + Requires strong aerobic fitness.

    + Ability to work in a dusty, dirty and odorous environment.

    + Must be free of animal related allergies.

    WORKING CONDITIONS:

    + Occasional extended work hours, including weekends and holidays. On-call availability nights and weekends. Variable hours depending on the current needs of the unit. Lunch hours may vary and will be established per the needs of the unit.

    + Work schedule is subject to change with prior notification.

    + Restricted time off or vacation during peak business cycles.

    + Work occurs in a secured facility, in an environment where animals are used for teaching and research.

    + May require working with or being in areas where hazardous materials, animal allergens and/or infectious diseases are present.

    + Specific hazards include, but are not limited to: zoonosis, chemicals, pesticides, and solvents.

    + Must perform tasks that require the use of personal protective equipment, such as safety glasses and shoes, protective clothing, and gloves; may require use of a respirator.

    Additional WORKING CONDITIONS:

    • The successful candidate will be required to complete an initial and annual Occupational Health Surveillance questionnaire and may be required to undergo a physical examination and/or immunizations.

    • Expected to follow all safety requirements and procedures.

     

    _The expected pay range for this position is $160,953 to $197,562._ _Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position._
