    The System Offices is one of several system members within the Texas A&M University System representing one of the largest systems of higher education in the nation, with a network of 11 universities, a comprehensive health science center, eight state agencies, and the RELLIS Campus. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC), part of the Texas A&M University System (TAMUS), invites applications for a full-time Technologist.

     

    The Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC) (https://bcdc.tamus.edu/) - located on the 2,300-acre RELLIS Campus in Bryan, TX - is an ecosystem for agile technology development and service-member-inspired research. The BCDC is the result of a partnership between the Department of Defense, Texas A&M University System, and the State of Texas. The $200 million complex is designed to bring together researchers from U.S. universities, the military, and the private sector for collaboration, demonstrations, and high-tech testing of initiatives to help accelerate military innovation for our nation’s defense.     Job Description Summary:

    The Technologist independently applies advanced knowledge of scientific research or engineering principles and practices in broad areas of assignments and related fields al the George H.W. Bush Combat Development Complex (BCDC). The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and refining heat treatment processes to optimize microstructural stability and performance, designing and implementing advanced testing methods to assess thermal. mechanical, and oxidative properties of high-temperature materials, and conducting materials characterization using techniques such as SEM, XRD, thermal analysis, and mechanical testing to understand degradation mechanisms and performance limits, Additionally, the role involves investigating innovative manufacturing approaches to improve thermal and mechanical properties, structural efficiency, and high-temperature durability while collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to integrate malarial solutions into real-world defense applications. The ideal candidate will have a hands-on approach to research, strong problem-solving skills, and the ability to translate experimental findings into practical advancements in material performance.

     

    The materials for extreme environments research team at BCDC aims to address several critical challenges in the manufacturing, design and evaluation of high-performance materials for hypersonic vehicles and structures subjected to severe aero-thermal environments. The primary objectives of this project are to: develop and evaluate leading-edge and outer mold line materials to better resist dynamic material degradation processes: and develop advanced manufacturing concepts for carbon-carbon composites to enhance interlaminar properties, improve structural and thermal efficiency and promote robust seams.

    Responsibilities:

    - Provides technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis, and resolution of problems in area of expertise.- Utilizes established engineering principles in the design and evaluation of engineering components.- Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling and monitoring of work activities.- Create and interpret technical drawings and schematics.- Performs technical research and gathers data needed by engineers to solve technical problems and recommend actions.- Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches.- Implement heat treatment/sintering protocols to enhance the microstructural stability, mechanical properties, and thermal resistance of materials.- Evaluate the effects of thermal processing on phase transformations, grain structure, and oxidation resistance.- Develop and conduct experiments to assess the mechanical, thermal, and oxidative performance of high-temperature materials.

     

    - Utilize advanced testing techniques such as tensile, fatigue, creep, and thermal cycling to evaluate material behavior.- Utilize SEM, XRD, EDS, DSC, TGA, and other analytical techniques to investigate material degradation mechanisms.- Analyze and interpret test results to improve material design and manufacturing processes.- Develop innovative processing techniques.- Explore additive manufacturing and novel fabrication methods to improve material performance.- Process large datasets using computational tools (MATLAB, Python, etc.) to extract meaningful insights.- Prepare technical reports, research publications, and presentations summarizing key findings.- Identify trends, correlations, and failure mechanisms to guide material development efforts.- Communicate effectively with interdisciplinary teams, sponsors, and stakeholders.- Work closely with engineers, scientists, and government agencies and participate in team discussions, contribute technical advice.- Maintain a safe and organized research environment, following proper laboratory protocols.- Adhere to compliance standards for handling high-temperature materials and hazardous substances.- Monitor advancements in materials science, manufacturing methods, and testing techniques relevant to extreme environments.

     

    - Integrate cutting-edge research findings into ongoing projects to drive innovation.- Other duties as assigned.

    Education and Experience:

    Technologist I

     

    - Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Technologist II

     

    - Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    - Two years of related experience.

     

    Technologist III

     

    - Bachelor’s degree in applicable field or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    - Four years of related experience.

    Registration, Certifications, and Licenses:

    -Must be able to gain and maintain a DoD (Department of Defense) security clearance.

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    - Strong understanding of high-temperature materials, carbon-carbon composites, and refractory metals.

     

    - Knowledge in thermal processing, phase transformations, sintering, and microstructural optimization for materials.

     

    - Experience with some of the following, SEM, XRD, EDS, DSC, TGA, and mechanical testing methods (tensile, compression, shear, fatigue, etc.).

     

    - Knowledge of thermal, mechanical, and oxidative testing for materials.

     

    - Familiarity with composite manufacturing techniques, additive manufacturing, and processing methods for high-temperature materials.

     

    - Experience with MATLAB, Python, or other data analysis tools for processing experimental results.

     

    - Ability to develop, implement, and optimize testing protocols for material evaluation.

     

    - Strong analytical skills to assess test results and troubleshoot material performance issues.

     

    - Experience preparing research reports, technical papers, and presentations.

     

    - Proficiency in handling high-temperature furnaces, thermal testing systems, and mechanical testing equipment.

     

    - Ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams and communicate findings to researchers, engineers, and stakeholders.

     

    - Ability to design experiments, analyze data, and derive conclusions with minimal supervision.

     

    - Quickly learn and implement emerging testing methods, materials processing techniques, and analytical tools.

     

    - Able to work across multiple projects while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy.

     

    - Ability to multi-task and work cooperatively with others.
