Las Animas County (pop. 14,373) was one of the original counties in Colorado. The county takes its name from the Mexican Spanish name of the Purgatoire River, originally called “El Río de las Ánimas Perdidas en Purgatorio,” which means "River of the Lost Souls in Purgatory.” It is the largest county in the State at 4,749 square miles. Trinidad, the County seat, is rich in western-frontier history, expansive mountain vistas, and abundant tourism attractions. Situated alongside the foothills of the southern Rocky Mountains and the Purgatoire River, Trinidad’s origins date back to its early days as a trading post on the historic Santa Fe Trail.

The county still relies heavily on ranching as its main economic engine. Rural living is one of the attractions that has drawn many newcomers to the county in recent years. There is a rich history of Natural Resources and a boundless supply of outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, biking, and hiking. The local economy that once was agriculture, and mineral extraction is transforming toward recreation, tourism, creative arts and retail services.

The county has strong support from volunteers and civic organizations. To learn more about Las Animas County, go to:http://www.lasanimascounty.netand to learn more about Colorado State University Extension, go to:www.ext.colostate.edu.
