NYU’s Washington, DC Academic Center is seeking a local, part-time lecturer to teach an undergraduate course, “Introduction to Political Psychology.” The course will be under the sponsorship of the Department of Politics.
The course is expected for Summer 2025 (May 19 to July 1). The class typically meets for 3.5 hours twice a week, for six weeks. In addition to the time required for course preparation, classroom instruction, and assessment, the instructor is required to hold office hours, during which the instructor will be available to meet with students.
The instructor role includes all preparation, delivery, and grading. Using Washington, DC as a learning tool (e.g., a guest speaker, an excursion) is an expectation for the course. Courses are to be intellectually challenging in content, and rigorous student assessment is required. We are especially interested in qualified candidates who share NYU Washington, DC’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and who can contribute to the diversity of intellectual life at our site.
Course Description
This course provides a comprehensive survey of the study of political psychology. It reviews the historical development of political psychology, as well as substantive topics from current scholarship, such as authoritarianism and mass politics; personality and political leadership; mass media and candidate perception; left-right (or liberal-conservative) ideology; public opinion and voting; individual and group decision-making; leadership and persuasion; social identification and social dominance; racial and ethnic prejudice; intergroup relations; causes and effects of terrorism; protest, collective action, and revolution.

All part-time instructors are expected to have a Ph.D. or terminal degree in Psychology, Political Science, or a relevant field. Qualified applicants will ideally have 2-3 years of experience teaching at the university level. In some instances, significant professional expertise and experience in a relevant field may be suitable. The salary will be based on equivalent and appropriate part-time faculty rates for the course and location.
