Description
STATEMENT OF DUTIES
The Behavioral Intervention Specialist (BIS) is responsible for developing, implementing, and monitoring behavior intervention plans and strategies for individuals receiving services in the mental health (MH) programs. The BIS works closely with program staff, clinical teams, and individuals to promote positive behavioral outcomes and enhance the quality of life for those in care.
GENERAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Conduct comprehensive behavioral assessments, including functional behavior assessments (FBAs), to identify the root causes of behaviors.
+ Analyze data and observations to develop evidence-based intervention strategies.
+ Develop, implement, and monitor individualized behavior support plans tailored to each individual’s needs.
+ Regularly review and update behavior plans to ensure their effectiveness and compliance with mental health program guidelines.
+ Provide ongoing training and support to program staff on behavior intervention techniques, de-escalation strategies, and plan implementation.
+ Coach staff to ensure consistent application of behavioral strategies.
+ Provide direct intervention and support during behavioral crises.
+ Train and guide staff on appropriate crisis intervention techniques and assist with post-incident reviews.

+ Work collaboratively with interdisciplinary team members (e.g., therapists, psychiatrists, case managers) to ensure comprehensive care.
+ Participate in treatment team meetings, case conferences, and program development activities.
+ Oversee and ensure accurate collection of behavioral data to monitor progress and outcomes.
+ Analyze trends and make data-informed decisions to improve behavior plans.
+ Maintain thorough and up-to-date documentation, including progress notes, reports, and incident logs, in compliance with agency and regulatory standards.
+ Prepare and present reports for internal reviews, audits, and treatment planning meetings.
+ Ensure behavior intervention plans comply with all state and federal regulations and align with agency policies and procedures.
+ Stay current on best practices, treatment methodologies, and relevant laws impacting behavioral support services in mental health settings.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
+ Excellent communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills.
+ Strong training and coaching abilities to support staff in implementing BSPs.
+ Ability to manage crisis situations effectively and calmly.
+ Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and electronic documentation systems.
+ Must be able to perform physical tasks related to crisis intervention (if required and trained).
+ Ability to travel between programs as needed
+ Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and lift occasionally as part of job duties.
+ Work is primarily performed in residential group homes, program sites, or administrative offices.
+ May require occasional evening or weekend hours for emergencies or training purposes.
Qualifications
+ Master’s degree in psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Special Education, Social Work, or a related field required.
+ Minimum of two (2) years of experience working in a mental health or behavioral support setting.
+ Experience in behavior assessments, interventions, and creating behavior support plans.
