Dr. Marcelo Mattar is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate to investigate the neural mechanisms underlying continual learning in humans. The successful candidate will develop computational models examining the tradeoff between task orthogonalization (differentiating memory representations to prevent interference) and abstraction (extracting shared structure across tasks to facilitate generalization). These models will be validated through behavioral experiments and neuroimaging (MEG) studies in humans. The research will focus on two key areas: (1) investigating how human continual learning dynamically balances task orthogonalization and abstraction, and (2) examining how neural replay—the spontaneous reactivation of learned neural patterns—supports human continual learning by optimizing task representations offline and guiding decision-making online.
In compliance with NYC’s Pay Transparency Act, the annual base salary range for this position is $62,500-$90,000. New York University considers factors such as (but not limited to) the specific grant funding and the terms of the research grant when extending an offer.
A PhD in psychology, neuroscience, computer science, engineering, or any other related field. Other requirements for this position include:
(1) Experience with human behavioral and/or neuroimaging experiments.
(2) A strong technical background in Bayesian and reinforcement learning models.
