    Salary Grade: NC18 Salary Range: $61,545 - $107,703

     

    The Hydraulics Unit provides hydrologic and hydraulic design recommendations and advice to all DOT personnel on surface drainage and stormwater quality matters that are required for the development of the department’s multi-modal projects during the stages of planning, design, permitting, construction and maintenance. The Unit also manages two statewide Federal compliance programs: National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) and National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) and supports extreme event operations.     We are looking for an Engineer II to work in our Division support section.

    In the position you will:

    + work within a hydraulic engineering squad to develop and support hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) studies for NCDOT transportation facilities. These studies include hydraulic planning reports, drainage investigations, final hydraulic designs, riverine modeling, bridge and culvert hydraulic reports, stormwater management plans and floodplain compliance reports.

    + perform H&H storm response and recovery, watershed modeling, advanced H&H modeling and design, stormwater control measure design.

    + develop H&H best practices.

    + develop digital CAD models.

    + develop stormwater best management practices.

    + attend and participate in field scoping, research and development, and training.

    + be required to travel overnight occasionally.

    + perform Field work which may require traversing steep terrains, thick undergrowth, and adverse weather conditions.

     

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Knowledge of hydrologic and hydraulic design practices as well as riverine modeling as it applies to the transportation facilities.

    + Knowledge of FEMA and stormwater regulations, FHWA and AASHTO guidance as related to hydraulic design.

    + Competency with computer applications including MS Office, Hydraulics modelling software, web-based GIS applications, MicroStation, PDF viewers and editors.

    + Experience applying engineering principles to typical design situations and making sound recommendations and decisions using guidelines, performance metrics and sound engineering judgement.

    + Experience conducting activities to meet established goals while ensuring project quality and compliance.

    + Good oral and written communication skills.

    + Ability to work well within a group setting with some supervision.

    + Considerable knowledge and understanding of concepts, practices, and theories used in hydraulic engineering and the ability to use it in practice.

    + Ability to develop and/or create informational products; manage program/project plan and develop and implement short-term strategies.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and three (3) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Qualification May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
