The anticipated salary range for this role is between $90,000.00 and $135,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
SMBC Capital Markets, Inc. (CM) is seeking a Market Risk Governance Associate within its Risk Management Department. This role will oversee coverage across SMFG Combined U.S. Operations (CUSO), including CM and SMBC Nikko Securities America, Inc., with a focus on centralizing efforts to enhance the efficiency of our risk organization in the US. The Associate will collaborate with teams in the Front Office, Finance, Accounting, Compliance, Legal, and Audit, while leveraging resources within the Risk Management Department, to cover market risk across the banking book, derivatives, and securities products.
Role Objectives: Delivery
1. Maintain entity level Risk Governance in compliance with CFTC/NFA and SEC/FINRA regulations and uphold the market risk governance framework across CUSO under FRB and other regulations.
2. Maintain entity level Risk Appetite Framework, collaborating with relevant departments and securing approvals.
3. Manage risk policies and procedures to reflect evolving risk frameworks.
4. Assist in preparing risk materials for Senior Management and governing bodies.
5. Support other Risk Governance and Enterprise Risk matters, such as the New Business / Product Approval process and Risk & Control Self-Assessment (RCSA) coordination.

1. Partner with other CUSO and entity-level departments to maintain and promote a robust risk management framework.
2. Liaise with other risk teams (Liquidity Risk, Model Risk, Enterprise Risk, etc.) to support the legal entity and CUSO-wide risk functions.

Knowledge
1. Understanding of financial instruments, securities, and derivatives and their key risks.
2. Knowledge of the Dodd Frank Act, CFTC Rule 23.600, the Volcker Rule, Swap Dealer registration and other regulatory requirements.
Communication
1. Excellent communication and relationship-building skills to work with colleagues and senior management across internal departments, affiliates, Tokyo Head Office, and globally.
Qualifications and Skills
Preferred Previous Work Experience
• Work Experience: 3+ years of experience in the financial services industry, preferably in risk management.
• Prior experience with policies and procedures management, risk governance, and/or coordinating with internal/external auditors and regulators is preferred.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including business writing and presentation drafting.
• Software Systems / Programming Languages: Microsoft Office Suite. Strong Excel, Word and PowerPoint skills.
• Language Skills: Business fluency in English (Japanese is preferred).
Preferred Education/Licenses/Certifications/Registrations
• Education: Required – BA / BS
Other Skills, Abilities and/or Training
• Highly organized and detail-oriented, and strong multi-tasking and time management skills in a fast-paced environment.
• Project management experience preferred.
• Ability to understand, communicate with, and effectively interact with people across cultures.
