Description
The Data Center Controls Automation and Support team is looking for an innovative, self-directed Systems Development Engineer to drive the development and scaling of controls deployment services used across AWS Data Centers worldwide. Contribute to Amazon's vision of developing the safest and most secure, reliable, and efficient data centers on Earth.
As a Systems Development Engineer II on this team, you will design new software solutions that power AWS Data Center controls deployment platform and management software products.
- Leverage your expertise in areas such as systems automation, software and test automation, and mission-critical embedded systems at scale
- Develop tools and services to automate data center operations, drive operational excellence, and work closely with internal customers
- Have the opportunity to work on full stack of the technology (i.e. UI, middle-tier, back end database)
- Use available AWS related technology to build innovation solution to challenging problems
- Work alongside a talented, cross-functional team of hardware engineers, data center operations, and security specialists
- Contribute to the vision of developing the safest and most secure, reliable, and efficient data centers on Earth

Key job responsibilities
- Design and implement scalable system solutions and infrastructure components
- Write and maintain automation scripts for deployment and configuration
- Participate in system architecture discussions and provide technical input
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and implement preventive measures
- Create and optimize automation frameworks for deployment and operations
- Collaborate with stakeholders to define technical requirements and solutions
- Evaluate and implement new technologies to improve system capabilities
The ideal candidate for this role will have a strong background in systems development, with expertise in areas such as system design, system integration, controls systems, scripting, and software engineering principles. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, collaborative environment are also essential.
This is a critical role within Amazon's engineering organization, and successful engineers will have the opportunity to make a significant impact on the company's products and services.
About the team
The Data Center Controls Automation and Support team develops tooling for data center controls device frameworks and device lifecycle management in AWS Data Centers. This includes both frontend and backend services use by internal development teams and on-site customers. Our tools power the industrial controls systems deployed in our data centers and make controls operations more effective and efficient.
Basic Qualifications
- 2+ years of non-internship professional software development experience
- 1+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- 7+ years of administrative experience in networking, storage systems, operating systems and hands-on systems engineering experience
- Knowledge of systems engineering fundamentals (networking, storage, operating systems)
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as C++, C#, Java, Python, Golang, PowerShell, Ruby
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with PowerShell (preferred), Python, Ruby, or Java
- Experience working in an Agile environment using the Scrum methodology
- Experience building services using AWS products
- Experience in automating, deploying, and supporting large-scale infrastructure
- Knowledge of industrial mechanical and/or electrical controls systems

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $116,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $201,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
