Description of Work

The position will function as an Engineering Technician II in the Wake North B County Maintenance Unit located in Bunn, NC. This position will report to the Franklin County Maintenance office but will perform work in Wake County. In this position, you will be responsible for technical support to the Wake Bunn County Maintenance Office. You will assist in the inspection of commercial driveway permits, right-of-way utility encroachments, erosion control, traffic control devices, and roadway construction. You may also be required to inspect contractor performance including guardrail repairs, long arm mowing and roadside mowing.

You will perform routine inspection on a variety of projects to ensure general compliance with plans and specifications and submit required records, reports, and diaries within specified time frame. Work in this position will be subject to both inside and outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. You must obtain and keep current QMS Asphalt & Concrete Testing Certifications, Roadway Density Certifications & Erosion Control Certificates Levels II & III. You will be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

+ Experience in conducting independent, moderately complex inspections, with limited supervision.

+ Experience independently conducting inspections for compliance with contract agreements and specifications.

+ Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry.

+ A working knowledge and understanding of NCDOT concepts, practices, and theories used in highway maintenance.

+ Knowledge and skill in the use of computers, software and basic mathematics.

Additional Expectations:

Physical activities include but are not limited to standing, walking, talking and hearing. The selected applicant will be expected to legally operate a motor vehicle. The employee must be able to communicate in a clear, concise manner, both orally and in writing. Safety toe shoes are required.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Associate degree in an applicable area of Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or a related curriculum from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressive technician level experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
