    Job Announcement

     

    This position serves as a police polygraph examiner assigned to the Administrative Support Bureau. Administers polygraph examinations to applicants as part of the pre-employment screening process for police, fire, rescue, and sheriff's departments. Develops and conducts pre-test interviews, documents test results and reports findings, and reviews case reports. As assigned, may assist in applicant recruitment, testing, and initial screening.

    Illustrative Duties

    + Schedules and administers pre-employment polygraph examinations;

    + Conducts pretest interviews to determine factors affecting test conditions;

    + Using polygraph instrument, records permanent and simultaneous record of cardiovascular, galvanic, and respiratory patterns;

    + Formulates questions to be used in polygraph examinations;

    + Interprets results of physiological responses noted on charts to determine truthfulness or deception;

    + Conducts further inquiry into case s where deception is noted;

    + Reports results of examination in writing;

    + May testify as an expert witness in court regarding polygraph findings;

    + May administer criminal examinations;

    + May conduct polygraph examinations for internal affairs investigations;

    + Requisitions supplies and recommends purchase of necessary equipment.

     

    Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities

    + Knowledge of the psychological and physiological aspects of polygraph;

    + Knowledge of polygraph techniques, chart analysis and interpretation;

    + Knowledge of the laws and regulations related to administration of polygraphs;

    + Skill in operating polygraph equipment, including computerized polygraph systems;

    + Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;

    + Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with applicants and law enforcement staff;

    + Ability to maintain confidentiality and security of records and information;

    + Ability to maintain a high level of ethical standards;

    + Ability to demonstrate a high level of integrity and be truthful at all times.

     

    Employment Standards

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

    Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to:

    High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education;

     

    Plus, graduation from an accredited polygraph school approved or recognized by the American Polygraph Association;

     

    Plus, three years of polygraph examination experience, preferably in law enforcement and pre-employment/criminal examinations.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS :

    + Associate or bachelor's degree in forensic psychology, police science, or criminal justice

    + Background investigations, recruitment, testing, and applicant processing experience

    + Experience utilizing Lafayette Instrument Polygraph Equipment and related software

    CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:

    + Driver's license (Required)

    + Polygraph Examiner (VA) Virginia Department of Professional and Occupational Regulation-DPOR) (Required)

    NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENT:

    The appointee to the position will be required to complete a criminal background check, credit check, driving record check, and polygraph exam to the satisfaction of the employer.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    Work requires ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment and to sit for long periods of time. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.

    SELECTION PROCEDURE:

    Panel interview; may include a practical exercise.
