The School of Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Curriculum (Director) to join their team.
The Director of Curriculum (Director) in the Dean’s Office, University of Washington School of Medicine (UWSoM), reports directly to the Associate Dean for Curriculum and serves as the chief administrator for the UWSoM curriculum. The Director is responsible for administration, management, and governance of the curriculum and delivery of student services as related to the curriculum. The Director plays a key role in the leadership team of the SoM; with responsibility for leading the curriculum office in the implementation of strategic plans for curriculum initiatives and ensuring continued adherence to the plans selected. This position oversees a team of fourteen professional and classified staff and directs the day-to-day operations of the four-year MD program curriculum. The Director serves as a resource on policy and curriculum matters to deans, school leaders and faculty. This position is responsible for directing the administrative and planning processes for the four-year medical curriculum that serves over 1000 students, 180 regional third- and fourth-year teaching sites, and the school’s staff and faculty throughout the Washington, Wyoming, Alaska, Montana and Idaho (WWAMI) region. The position works collaboratively with the directors of other units within the school, including the registrar, director for academic learning and technologies, and twelve deans within the Academic Affairs unit. The Director supervises the work of five professional level positions and directs the work of eight professional staff and one classified staff in the Curriculum office and oversees human resource process for five professional staff in the Rural Programs office. The Director is required to effectively manage the performance of staff to ensure that individuals are supported, trained and communicate across teams to provide exemplary service for curriculum initiatives and improvement.
This position has frequent contact with the school’s academic and administrative leadership and serves as a delegate for the Associate Dean for Curriculum. This includes serving as a critical interface between the following deans and units in Academic Affairs: Vice Dean for Academic, Rural and Regional Affairs, Associate Dean for Curriculum, Assistant Dean for Basic Science and Clinical Curriculum, Assistant Dean for Rural Programs, Associate Dean for Student Affairs, Assistant Dean for Student Development and Equity, Diversity and Inclusion, Associate Dean for the Colleges, and five Foundation Deans and nine Clinical Regional Deans based throughout the WWAMI region, six SoM curriculum committee chairs, faculty (both based in Seattle and outside Seattle), and the medical students on any number of complex curricular issues. This position requires a high degree of independent decision-making and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to prioritize many competing tasks with and from students, faculty and Dean’s Office staff. Because of the regional nature of the medical school, the Director must be able to address diverse and complex questions, problems, and concerns from faculty, staff and students across the WWAMI region in a professional, prompt and confidential manner. With the expansion of the medical school, continuous curriculum improvement, and related curricular innovations that lie ahead, the position will require the ability to multitask, prioritize job responsibilities, and work effectively with faculty, students and staff.
This position directly impacts the scope and quality of instruction of School of Medicine medical students throughout the four years of medical school. The Director advises the deans on needed changes and improvements to the curriculum and implements changes and improvements as directed by the deans. The Director ensures that all curriculum policies and standards are up-to-date, consistent with Curriculum Committee recommendations, and communicated to the Associate and Assistant Deans, faculty and students across the seven WWAMI teaching sites. This position must also ensure that all approved curriculum meets compliance and accreditation standards as established by Liaison Committee on Medical Education, federal, state and university regulations, and other requirements as are appropriate. If an individual without a sophisticated understanding of the specific laws, accreditation standards, and local policies and procedures, then the UW School of Medicine could lose its accreditation and potentially not be allowed to provide medical education for its medical students.
