Job Summary

This is a highly technical aviation position and is under the general direction and supervision of the Air Support Unit (ASU) Supervisor and/or the ASU Maintenance Officer and requires an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic's Certificate. Mechanic will be responsible for following all regulations as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and Interagency Committee for Aviation Policy (ICAP).

This position is responsible for overseeing and performing scheduled and unscheduled aircraft maintenance; inspections and corrosion control of aircraft components; and maintain appropriate and accurate aircraft records and logs. Work hours are varied as needed and/or required.

This is an extra help position, working on an as needed basis, without a specific number of guaranteed hours per week.

This job posting is for a merged eligibility list from which all Helicopter Mechanic-Extra Help positions in the Spokane County Sheriff's Office will be filled.

Training & Experience Form

Applicants who meet the minimum requirements and have submitted complete applications will be emailed a Training & Experience Form with a specified deadline.

Oral Board Interview

Oral Board Interviews will be scheduled at a later date for those who submit their complete Training & Experience Form by the specified deadline.

Overall Placement on the eligibility list will be determined by 50% Training & Experience Form score and 50% Oral Board Interview score.

An overall combined score of at least 70% must be achieved in order to be placed on the eligibility list.

PLEASE NOTE: All Civil Service exams, oral board interviews, or any other interview involved with this position must be conducted in-person at the applicant's expense. No Web/Video Conference, over-the-phone, or outside testing facilities are permitted. No exceptions.

Examples of Duties

The following duties ARE NOT intended to serve as an exclusive list of all essential job functions performed by all employees in this classification, but only as a representative summary of the primary job functions and responsibilities. Incumbent may not be required to perform all job functions and may be required to perform additional, position specific tasks.

Maintain OH-58A, Bell 206 series, UH-1H and/or other turbine powered helicopters.

Perform skilled maintenance and repair work on various sections of helicopters including airframes, engines and electronic components.

Perform preventive maintenance inspections in accordance with ICAP Regulations, or required by the FAA or manufacturer to ensure safe operating condition of helicopters.

Disassemble and examine parts and components using precision and diagnostic instruments to measure parts for wear and defects.

Diagnose mechanical problems observed during inspection and those reported by pilots and flight officers to determine needed repairs.

Refer to blueprints, diagrams and repair manuals in order to determine how to make repairs and replace worn or defective parts.

Reassemble and test parts and equipment for proper operation.

Diagnose electrical malfunctions and perform routine repairs and maintenance or remove electrical components and specialized equipment for repair by vendors.

Fabricate parts including work aids such as braces or supports to hold aircraft components in place during maintenance and repair.

Maintain accurate records of scheduled inspections, maintenance, repairs and replacement of aircraft components as required by manufacturer's specifications and department protocols.

Prepare and sign off on inspection reports providing inspectors authorization upon completion of repairs and inspections.

Perform related duties safely, effectively, and efficiently in a variety of conditions and environments as required.

Perform all duties with minimal supervision.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

Must be a citizen of the United States or a lawful permanent resident, or a deferred action for childhood arrivals (DACA) recipient; must be able to speak, read, and write the English language; high school diploma or GED.

Must possess and maintain a current airframe and power plant mechanics (A&P) certificate from the FAA, PLUS have an equivalent to at least three (3) years of full-time experience as an FAA Certified Airframe and Power Plant Mechanic engaged in performing maintenance and alterations, with experience working on turbine powered helicopters.

Must be able to see, hear, feel, smell, touch, speak and move about (with or without corrective devices) to perform the duties, responsibilities, tasks and essential functions required or assigned to this position. N o adult felony convictions. A valid driver’s license is required at the time of appointment and must be retained throughout employment.
