    Position will function as a Transportation Worker IV in our Iredell County Maintenance Unit. Work will consist of a wide range of progressively responsible maintenance tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair and construction of State maintained roads and roadside features. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation or other drainage task, snow removal operations, inspecting contract work and monitoring manual tasks performed and operating heavy equipment. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. Work may require lifting up to 50 lbs. repeatedly. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency call back and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances.     Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies

    Applicants must submit an application that clearly reflects work experience that demonstrates the following:

    + Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher crack sealing machine, track excavators, skid steer or sweeper

    + Knowledge of intermediate Work Zone Safety & NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices.

    + Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation or asphalt patching

    + Demonstrated ability to supervise and to train others in equipment operations as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew

    + Experience in snow and ice removal operations

    Additional Expectations:

    Employee must be able to legally operate a state vehicle, manual and automatic, and have a valid North Carolina Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. Steel toe safety shoes will be needed. Employee will be expected to work in emergency situations and inclement weather.

     

    Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

    High school or General Educational Development diploma and six years of experience operating equipment directly related to the area of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

     

    Necessary Special Requirements Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire.
