    The Shepherd School of Music at The Rice University invites applications for the position of Tenure-Track/Tenured Faculty, Professor of Viola, to begin July 1, 2026 The Shepherd School of Music at Rice was founded in 1975 and is one of the nation’s premier music schools. It currently has approximately 275 music majors from the United States and abroad. Since 1991, the Shepherd School has been housed in Alice Pratt Brown Hall, which features four performing venues, 54 teaching studios, 55 practice rooms, seven classrooms, and an electronic music studio. A second, new music building, the Brockman Music and Performing Arts Center, was completed in 2020 primarily to serve as a space for the Shepherd School’s opera and chamber music programs.

     

    Required Qualifications: Candidates must possess an established national and international reputation as an artist/teacher, a proven record of successful teaching, and the ability to attract and recruit outstanding undergraduate and graduate students. Applications from candidates with current or recent experience playing with a major orchestra or chamber ensemble, or who have had a top-level performing career combined with teaching experience commensurate with the expectations of a leading music school will be given full consideration.

     

    Preferred Qualifications: Ideal candidates will be exceptional teachers with a strong history of work in a School or Conservatory of Music and have obtained at least a master’s degree or professional equivalent.

     

    Responsibilities: Teach and recruit undergraduate and graduate students; maintain professional career as artist/teacher; serve on doctoral committees; conduct regular studio class; contribute vigorously to the School's educational, creative research and engagement missions. Additional teaching responsibilities may include coaching chamber music, and teaching courses in the candidate’s area(s) of interest and abilities.
