Summary The incumbent serves as a Biomedical Engineer in the Biomedical Engineering Section of Facilities Management Division. The section is responsible for the Biomedical Engineering Program at the Captain James A. Lovell Federal Health Care Center (FHCC). The Captain James A. Lovell FHCC is a 367 bed consolidated hospital that provides primary, secondary and tertiary services through divisions at the West and East Campuses in North Chicago, Illinois, and Community Based Outpatient Clinics CBOCs Responsibilities Biomedical Engineering work required, in addition to knowledge and skill in engineering disciplines, includes a background in physiology and anatomy and a practical ability in specialized subject matter areas, such as computer applications, electronics or mathematics. Knowledge in multiple scientific disciplines, including electrical engineering, physics, chemistry, biology, mechanical engineering, and biomedical engineering. Must possess professional knowledge of biomedical engineering principles, procedures, standards, equipment, techniques and methods Responsible for chairing the Biomedical Quality Assurance Committee; Joint Commission preparation; liaison with Maintenance & Repair; and Continuous Readiness. Serves as a technical advisor on the medical center's Equipment Committee. As part of a technical team, helps anticipate the development and future clinical use of diagnostic, therapeutic, analytic and imaging systems not yet on the market. Evaluate the implications that such changes in technology and systems will have on the clinical staff. Serves as part of a team responsible for the overall program of medical equipment maintenance, including planning, selection, consultation, installation, application, and maintenance of medical equipment. Responsible for chairing the Biomedical Quality Assurance Committee; Joint Commission preparation; liaison with Maintenance & Repair; and Continuous Readiness. Assists in the coordination of purchase, planning, construction, installation, and in service training stages of major biomedical instrumentation projects, such as Cardiac Catheterization Laboratories, Radiology suites, and Operative Care suites Acts as a consultant to clinical departments regarding biomedical engineering questions and problems. With assistance from the Chief, provides consultation regarding acquisition of clinical instrumentation and application in the hospital setting. Finds solutions for the support of clinical functions when needed equipment or systems are not commercially available, or when interfaces or other customization is needed. Examples of acceptable engineering degrees include: Biomedical Engineering, Clinical Engineering, Bioengineering, Biomechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Biochemical Engineering. Titles may vary from educational institutions and change over time. Ability to understand the operational needs of clinical services in the health care system. iv. Ability to prepare material on current technical topics and trends, for presentation to other technical staff and mid-level hospital management, and the ability to keep abreast of changes in technology. Ability to implement and/or sustain an equipment management or biomedical research program that meets The Joint Commission (TJC), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), or other applicable regulatory requirements.] ii. Ability to conduct capital asset and infrastructure planning for medical equipment spanning initial concept, installation, and effective implementation of complex medical equipment. v. Ability to function as the subject matter expert in the field of biomedical engineering, directly supporting specialized clinical technology, including service, system administration, training, quality assurance, and life-cycle management. vi. Ability to effectively advise clinical and administrative staff on medical technology, including existing and emerging technology, which addresses viability, long-term suitability, compatibility, and/or safety. vii. Knowledge of concepts related to computer based medical systems, networking protocols, and information security as it applies to medical technology within VHA. viii. Skill in communicating and working collaboratively with key stakeholders, including technical and professional staff at various levels of the organization. ix. Ability to apply project management principles to deployment of medical equipment and health information technologies.
