Join the Texas A&M Small Animal Teaching Hospital as Veterinary Technician I in the Cardiology department! We are seeking a compassionate Veterinary Technician I to join our Cardiology team and assist in the treatment of small animals admitted to our hospital. In this position, you will support veterinary staff and help to maintain a sanitary and functionally well-organized service within the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital (http://vethospital.tamu.edu/small-animal-hospital) .

Minimum Qualifications
Associate’s degree in veterinary technology, biomedical science, animal science or a related area, or any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Persons in this position should possess basic computer skills, working knowledge of veterinary hospital equipment, the ability to multitask and work well with others, as well as the ability to plan and organize effectively.
The well-qualified candidate will also possess at least one year experience in a veterinary medical setting, a certification as a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), and be a Veterinary Technician Specialist in emergency critical care, internal medicine, or anesthesia.
What you need to know
Salary: Starting at $19.11/hour, c ompensation will be commensurate to the selected hire’s experience.
Schedule: This position may require working alternate shifts, holidays, weekends, or “on-call duty” for sick-call and ventilator call as required.

Some of the Responsibilities Include:
+ Assist Faculty, Residents, Interns, and Students: Assists in the instruction of interns and students. Instructs, guides, and supervises students in proper clinical techniques to support patient care. Monitors patients to detect any change in their clinical status and keep patients clean. Performs or assists with collection of patient’s blood, urine and tissues and ensure the proper submission procedure. Provides physical restraint for safe handling of patient animals.
+ Exercise Patients: Assists in the scheduling of surgical procedures, providing communication to all necessary areas of the hospital. Administers and monitors patient medication and diet as prescribed. Assists and instructs in the performance of diagnostic procedures and examinations.
+ Technical Support: Maintains proficiency with injectable and inhalant anesthetic methods. Assists and instructs students with administration of preanesthetic and anesthetic agents, intubation of patient animals and monitoring their physiologic status during anesthesia. Performs aseptic patient preparation. Assists in the recovery of anesthetized patients. Sets-up for cardiac catheterization procedures. Writes Catheterization Report for each procedure. Applies holter monitors and processing of results. Ensures the results are entered in the medical record.
+ Clinical Support: Assists the veterinarians in the delivery and instruction of primary/secondary care and anesthesia services. Monitors patients to detect any changes in their clinical status. Administers anesthetics, maintains anesthesia, calculates drug doses, provides, and instructs students on proper recovery and monitoring techniques. Places venous and arterial catheters and assists and instructs students in proper techniques for the placement of venous and arterial catheters.
+ Monitor and Record Data: Enters patient data and hospital fees into the hospital computer information system. Ensures all charges generated from treatments, procedures and supplies are correctly entered. Instructs students in the use of the hospital computer information system. Monitors and records physiological data into the patient record and into flow charts. Records all medications given. Maintains patient record filing system and maintains cardiology spreadsheets.
+ Research: Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed. Assists in clinical research efforts to include record keeping and data management.
+ Maintain Service Area: Maintains service area within the VMTH Maintain a sanitary and well-organized service area. Restocks expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains records of expendable supplies, drugs, and solutions. Maintains equipment within the service area to include the ultrasound machine, the electrocardiograph, various computers and printers, the Doppler, the Marquette Transcope and the Holter Monitors. Cleans, repackages and sterilizes surgical supplies.
+ Back-up Duties: Provides oversight of patients housed in isolation. Maintains certification or licensure where appropriate, radiation safety, infection control, and aseptic technique. Participates in clinical and basic research programs as needed.
