    Bard NYCis accepting applications for a Student Life Coordinator to support the student community of Bard NYC’s student residence/learning space in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. TheBard NYC residence (https://nycresidence.bard.edu/) hosts students participating in the Bard NYC study away program, as well as students from other colleges and universities. The Student Life Coordinator plays a key role in the day-to-day operations of the residence, including working with residents on conflict mediation, leading social and community-building programming, engaging with students on issues of health and wellness and helping students adapt to life in New York City. They are a point of contact for students’ non-academic concerns and work to foster a supportive educational environment that promotes students’ individual growth, community engagement, and academic achievement. The position requires participation in an on-call rotation and full-time residency in the dormitory.

     

    The Student Life Coordinator reports to the Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager and works closely with other Bard NYC colleagues as well as with Bard College colleagues at Bard’s main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, New York.

    Position Overview:

    Bard NYC is comprised of a small team of dedicated professionals in New York City, who work closely with colleagues at Bard College’s main campus in Annandale-on-Hudson, NY to deliver quality programming and support the success of students living and studying at Bard NYC. The student community is made up of a mix of undergraduate students from Bard and other institutions participating in the Bard NYC study away program, graduate students in Bard’s MA in Global Studies, and students from other colleges and universities studying or interning in New York City. Most residents spend one to two terms in the dormitory.

     

    The Bard NYC team works together to ensure student success, with the Student Life Coordinator working closely with other members of the student/residence life team on building a student community and helping to support the development of positive and healthy relationships among student residents. They serve as an advocate and mentor to dorm residents, engaging with student residents on non-academic issues, including health and wellness and roommate disputes. The position incorporates various aspects of student affairs into one role dedicated to support the small and transient student community made up of undergraduate and graduate students from a broad range of US and international institutions.

     

    This position requires a person with energy and creativity, dedicated to working intensively with college students as they adapt and integrate into life in New York City. The Student Life Coordinator works with the Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager and a small team of student staff members (Peer Counselors) to promote a safe and healthy living environment. Social and community building programming in the residence and local community is an essential responsibility for the Student Life Coordinator, as well as work with residents to build student-organized activities. The position also involves help in organizing and running events and activities in the facility connected to the Bard NYC study away program and the broader Bard College community. Due to the nature of the position, flexibility with non-traditional hours is imperative. The position includes administrative and office work for Bard NYC. The Student Life Coordinator position is an exciting opportunity to help shape and enhance a dynamic experience for students.

    Key responsibilities include:

    + Engaging with a community of up to 194 students on residence/student life issues

    + Working with the Res Life team on housing assignments, mediation between roommates, room changes and other aspects of residence life

    + Organizing and running social and community-building programming in the dormitory and local community with the support of Peer Counselors (RAs)

    + Holding office hours for student residents and working closely with them on various non-academic concerns, including providing guidance and support, in particular with helping students adjust to living in New York City and, in some cases, the United States

    + Working to ensure the health and safety of residents including addressing student wellness concerns, providing case management for students in emotional, psychological or medical distress; counseling and referring students to appropriate professional staff members and resources as needed

    + Identifying and promoting events taking place in Williamsburg and New York City to student residents

    + Event planning and management

    + Participating in an on-call rotation and assisting with after-hours emergency/crisis situations

    + Training, and supervision of student Peer Counselors (RAs) in coordination with the Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager

    + Participating in student move-in/move-out including managing student check-ins, move-out walk-throughs, and processing damage reports

    + Participation in dormitory orientation and tours of the local community

    + Work with the Director of Residence Life and Facility Manager on oversight of the residence, including making rounds of the facility and reporting any issues or concerns

    + Creating print and web-based materials related to living in the dormitory and broader Williamsburg community

    + Basic financial and office management

    + Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

    + Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred, in residence life/student affairs or a related field

    + At least two years of work experience in residence life, student affairs, student activities or management of study away/study abroad programming is highly desirable

    + Excellent interpersonal and human relations skills, written and verbal communication skills

    + Efficient time management skills with experience managing multiple priorities, multitasking, and meeting deadlines

    + Experience in event planning and management

    + Outstanding organizational and administrative capabilities

    + Ability to work independently and with limited supervision as well as work effectively within a team environment and with student leadership

    + Ability to both manage details and see the big picture of programs and projects

    + Strong working knowledge of New York City

    + Must be able to work within a department that values initiative, strong work ethic, and teamwork

    + A commitment to student advocacy and an interest in daily interaction with a variety of creative and independent students is a must

    + Full-time residency in the Bard NYC dormitory is required

     

    Compensation:$66,300-$68,000; full-time, 12-month, live-in exempt position

     

    Compensation includes salary, accommodation in the Williamsburg residence, work cell phone, professional development opportunities, benefits package including health benefits, paid vacation after the first year, and retirement plan after two years.

     

    This salary range reflects the College's good faith and reasonable estimate of the compensation for the position at the time of the job posting. Salary decisions are dependent on several factors including but not limited to market and organizational considerations, experience, and qualifications of a selected candidate as well as internal and external equity.

    About Bard NYC:

    Bard NYC is semester-long experiential learning undergraduate study-away program in New York City, which pairs academic study with professional internships. A semester combines 12-16 credits in a wide array of courses, including a core-seminar, with an internship of up to 20 hours per week.
