Job Title: Tissue TechnicianJob Description

The Tissue Technician will play a vital role as a Pathology Assistant, responsible for dissecting and grossing a variety of surgical specimens, including biopsies and complex cancer sections. This position requires inspecting specimens, describing and measuring tissue, inking when necessary, and sectioning the tissue for diagnostic processing. The technician will handle frozen sections, scan slides into the computer system for tracking, and deliver them with requisitions to pathologists. Additionally, the role involves preparing logs or transport, organizing the grossing area, and performing both routine and non-routine activities involved in preparing slides for microscopic evaluation by pathologists, according to established policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

+ Dissect and gross a variety of surgical specimens, including biopsies and complex cancer sections.

+ Inspect specimens, describe and measure tissue, ink if needed, and section tissue for diagnostic processing.

+ Perform frozen sections and scan slides into the computer system for tracking and delivery.

+ Prepare grossing area and manage logs or transport.

+ Perform routine and non-routine activities in slide preparation for microscopic evaluation.

+ Ensure proper specimen accessioning and labeling of all tissue samples, handling 100+ cases daily.

+ Process paperwork associated with accessioning and reporting.

+ Conduct gross tissue examination if personnel qualifications are met.

Essential Skills

+ Proficiency in tissue grossing and pathology.

+ Experience in laboratory settings, specifically as a Tissue Tech.

+ Knowledge of grossing procedures and techniques.

+ Bachelor's Degree in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology preferred.

+ Experience in a hospital setting, minimum of 1 year.

+ Familiarity with Copath and HealthConnect systems.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

+ Bachelor of Science in Laboratory Science or Medical Laboratory Technology preferred.

+ 60 semester hours or equivalent, including 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses.

+ 24 semester hours of science courses, including 6 semester hours of chemistry and biology.

+ Proficiency in voice recognition systems and working directly with pathologists.

Work Environment

The work is primarily based in Ontario, handling around 18,000 cases annually, with occasional duties in Fontana which processes 40,000 cases a year. The standard working hours are Monday to Friday, from 8 am to 4:30 pm, with rare opportunities for overtime. The role involves managing a volume of 60 cases per day. You will be part of a collaborative team culture, working alongside seasoned Pathology Assistants and directly with pathologists. Technologies used include voice recognition systems like Copath and HealthConnect.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $30.00/hr.
