    The Work You Will Do:

    Highway Maintenance Tech II Trainee – District Seven – District Maintenance – Tampa Operations Center

     

    This position will be responsible for maintaining our state roadway system.

    Anticipated Salary:

    $1,367.72 / bi-weekly

     

    A Competitive Area Differential (CAD) additive in the amount of $561.60 will be added to the annual salary.

    Your Specific Responsibilities:

    Assists with operating a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck once a Class B License Instructional Permit is obtained. Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment. Cleans and washes equipment.

     

    Uses small hand, power and pneumatic tools. Examples include shovels, hammers, drills, hand-held string and blade trimmers, push mowers, saws, jackhammers, etc. The duties and responsibilities are done in the performance and completion of one or more of the following assignments; repairs and/or replaces guardrails, attenuators and/or fences, assists in the repair of asphalt/concrete surfaces, cuts, trims and removes trees, shrubs and vegetation, assists in shoulder restoration including mulching, seeding, fertilizing, etc., removes litter and debris, performs large and small machine mowing, assists in repair, replacement and/or cleaning of drainage structures, assists in installation and/or removal of signs.

     

    Inspects and performs light maintenance on tools, equipment and vehicles.

     

    Flags traffic and/or places or removes traffic control devices.

    The Successful Candidate will have the following required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

    Knowledge of:

    • Typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques

    Skills in:

    • Operating a variety of hand and power tools

    Ability to:

    • Read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms

    • Maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures

    • Communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions

    • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others

    • Lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds

    • Stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis

    • Work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic

    • Stand for an extended period of time

    • Perform minor maintenance and/or repair jobs

    • Ability to operate motor vehicles and other mechanized equipment

    Other Job-Related Requirements:

    • While on-duty status, the positions incumbent must be readily available to operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL) the incumbent is required to possess, or on a routine basis performs other CMV safety-sensitive functions. The incumbent of this position is required to work with or around Department of Corrections inmates. A Class E driver's license is required at time of hire. A CDL Class B License Instructional Permit is required within 90 days of hire and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 12 months of employment.

    Minimum Qualifications:

    • A Class E driver’s license

     

    This position requires a valid Class (E) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. An unacceptable driving record is defined as any of the following:

     

    1. three (3) or more moving violations in the past three (3) years that accumulate three (3) or more points per violation;

    2. any two (2) convictions of reckless driving in the past three (3) years;

    3. a suspension or revocation of the driver license for moving violations in the past three (3) years; and

    4. a suspension or revocation for refusal to take a sobriety test, or any suspension or revocation for a DUI conviction, in the past four (4) years.

     

    Your driving record will be reviewed and the status of your driver license confirmed.

     

    A mandatory drug screening will be performed on the successful applicant.

     

    Applicants hired for this position with a Class E license will be required to obtain a Commercial Learners Permit (CLP) within 60 days of appointment, attend CDL training and successfully pass the CDL licensing test and obtain a CDL Class B license with air brakes within 10 months after appointment to the position. Once the CLP is obtained, candidates must register with the FMCSA Clearinghouse, as required, for the Department to conduct a query. Upon hire, this position also requires the applicant to have an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy. The costs of the initial CDL training and initial testing will be paid by the Department, subject to available funding. An employee will be given three chances to pass the license requirements. The employee will be responsible for paying for the initial CLP fee, as well as any additional training and re-test costs, and the CDL fee. If the employee voluntarily separates from the Department within two (2) years of obtaining their CDL, the employee will be responsible for paying the costs of the initial training and testing.
