    The Idaho Department of Transportation (ITD) currently has an opportunity for aWelder Machinist. This position will be reporting toDistrict 6 Rigby, Idaho.

     

    We are seeking a skilled and experienced individual to perform all types of welding, fabrication and machining to trucks, heavy equipment, snow removal equipment, and roadway structures, e.g. bridges and roadway parts, design improvements, repair procedures, design and install specialized devices, perform related work as required.

     

    Example of Duties

     

    + Perform structural repair, modification, and remanufacture of heavy road construction, maintenance, and snow removal equipment

    + Design, fabricate, and install specialized attached equipment and subsystems using steel, aluminum, and stainless steel. Examples include welding, cutting, machining, plows, harnesses, custom road maintenance attachments, avalanche gun platforms, truck-mounted brooms, etc.

    + Assess equipment damage and provide detailed repair estimates and timelines

    + Determine appropriate metal type, thickness, and welding process

    + Machine and fabricate parts for repair or new construction

    + Ensure accurate measurements to guarantee proper fit of fabricated or repaired components

    + Repair roadside fixtures such as cattle guards and light poles

    + Find and order correct parts; design custom parts or methods to improve equipment performance

    + Evaluate design or use-related equipment failures; redesign or re-manufacture to prevent recurrence using better materials and methods

    + Recommend improved repair or maintenance methods and record proposed changes in the fleet management system

    + Train equipment operators in the proper use and maintenance of specialized equipment

     

    Tools and Equipment Used

     

    + Hand tools: wrenches, sockets, screwdrivers, pliers, drills, grinders, impacts, saws, sanders, etc.

    + Measuring and diagnostic tools: digital multi-meters, electronic testers, micrometers, calipers, dial indicators

    + Computer systems and manufacturer-specific software for diagnostics and repairs

    + Welding and fabrication tools: MIG, TIG, stick, oxy-acetylene welders; lathes; mills; shapers; drill presses; metal brakes and shears; grinders; metal forges; CNC tables

    + Motorized and heavy equipment: forklifts, hydraulic cranes, yard tugs, transport trucks, overhead cranes (5, 7, 10 ton), dump trucks, snowplow trucks, loaders, backhoes

    Special Requirements:

    + Welding certifications (all types)

    + Class A CDL driver’s license

    + Flagging certification

    + First Aid and CPR certification

    + Forklift operator’s license

    + Ability to be on call 24/7 with a 30-minute response time.

    + Must be able to work in adverse weather conditions, day, or night.

    + Ability to make field repairs using the shop truck with available tools and parts.

    + Overhead hoist inspection and certification

    + Equipment rigging for hoisting

    + Familiarity with various manufacturer-specific electronic/mechanical systems

    + Experience transporting heavy equipment in accordance with DOT regulations.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Good knowledge of:

    + The methods and standard practices of the welding and machinist trades

    + Various metals and alloys

    Experience:

    + Using the tools and equipment common in the welding and machinist trades to fabricate, fit, assemble, manufacture, and repair parts and equipment

    + Working from blueprints and plans and specifications to determine dimensions, tolerances, and layout of work

    + Determining proper welding techniques for various alloys

    + Operating and maintaining metal-removing machines, metal forming equipment, machine tools and a variety of welding devices
