    City of Palo Alto Utilities is hiring two Overhead and Underground Electric Troubleman. The primary role of the Overhead and Underground Electric Troubleman is to install, maintain and repair high-powered electrical lines and systems as well as construct, maintain and repair overhead and underground electrical systems. This position requires climbing power poles and steel towers to perform repairs, as well as safely conducting rubber glove work on electrical systems with voltages up to 21,000 volts.

     

    In this journey-level role, you'll perform hands-on maintenance and minor repairs on both overhead and underground electrical systems. You'll be on the front lines responding to service outages, voltage issues, and customer concerns—helping ensure reliable power for our community.

     

    You’ll collaborate with Customer Service to handle the installation and removal of electrical services and meters, and partner with other departments to set up voltage and amperage testing equipment.

     

    The primary responsibility of this classification is emergency response and customer complaint investigations, therefore the incumbent will be required to work a 40 hour per week shift and may be a variation of the schedule as outlined below.

    Essential Duties

    Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following;

     

    + Answers, investigates and corrects trouble calls involving electric distribution, and street lighting.

    + Advises system operator of nature of trouble and the material and personnel required to correct the situation.

    + Installs and removes test equipment.

    + Performs visual inspections on substations.

    + Handles line, underground and substation switching and line patrolling.

    + Makes electric turn-ons and turn-offs.

    + Investigates trouble calls related to the supply of power to the water system.

    + Collects deposits and bills.

    + Sets up necessary emergency safety devices for various City facilities and situations.

    + Performs related work as required.

    + Work alone as may be necessary in connection with providing and maintaining electric service to the public.

     

    Working Conditions / Physical Requirements

     

    + Incumbents of this classification may be required to work outside their regularly scheduled hours, and to be available for emergency and/or pre-arranged work whenever called upon.

    + Incumbents of this classification may be subject to drug and/or alcohol testing as mandated by federal regulations.

    + Must be able to perform all of the essential functions of the job assignment.

    Minimum Qualifications

    Sufficient education, training and/or work experience to demonstrate possession of the following knowledge, skills, and abilities which would typically be acquired through:

    + Graduation from high school or possession of a G.E.D.

    + Five years of journey level experience as a Lineworker, including electrical service work.

    Special Requirements:

    + Possession of an appropriate valid California Class A driver's license is required, or possession of a valid Class C license at the time of employment and the ability to obtain Class A within six months of employment.

    + Rubber glove certification, administered by the City, in compliance with Title 8 - Electric Safety Orders.
