Description of Work Unit
Veterinary Teaching Hospital
At the CSU Veterinary Teaching Hospital ( VTH ) we exist to educate the next generation of veterinarians by providing exceptional veterinary care and service to the community every day. This work unit exists to provide administration and direction of the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and provide a support facility for service to the general public and referring veterinarians.

Position Summary
The Relief Veterinary Technician ( PRN ) Supervisor will oversee the PRN Veterinary Technicians at the Veterinary Teaching Hospital (small and large animal). The PRN veterinary technicians provide coverage to the departments/services and the PRN supervisor facilitates these requests. The PRN team is the internal “relief coverage” so that veterinary technicians can take time off in their departments. This is a highly visible position that requires one to work with other supervisors and faculty. They will collaborate across service/units and also take shifts as a PRN Veterinary Technician to provide coverage and identify opportunities for efficiency and training with the greater PRN team. They will also establish clearly defined short and long-term objectives for their direct reports and serves as a facilitator of written and verbal communication in a timely and effective manner. Successful candidate should have flexibility with their schedule to meet the needs of 24/7 operations.
Required Job Qualifications
- Registered Veterinary Technician ( RVT ) Certification or equivalent credential ( CVT , LVT , etc.)
- Minimum of 3 years of veterinary experience with demonstrated proficiency in animal handling, client communication, and basic lab procedures.
Preferred Job Qualifications
- Previous supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Proficiency in veterinary technical skills and ability to mentor staff
- Experience with hospital scheduling and staff training

Duty/Responsibility
- Oversee the coordination, management, and operational efficiency of the PRN program. This includes developing, implementing, and maintaining policies for PRN scheduling and utilization.
- Oversee PRN shift scheduling, including availability management, assignments, and logistics to ensure appropriate hospital coverage while aligning schedules with hospital demands and service priorities.
- Approve and manage shift modifications, trades, and coverage adjustments while ensuring compliance with minimum shift commitments and optimizing scheduling efficiency.
- Track and maintain accurate timeclock records, approving timesheets and monitoring scheduling patterns to improve operational efficiency and technician satisfaction.
- Ensure fair and equitable distribution of shifts wile prioritizing hospital need and maintain a protocol to manage emergent shift coverage needs.
- Act as a liaison between PRN staff and department managers/administration to facilitate smooth operations and conflict resolution.
- Track, monitor, and optimize training expenses and program sustainability.
- Assess hospital needs and strategically recruit PRN staff to fill service gaps
- Communicate filled and vacant shift requests to department managers to ensure transparency and operational efficiency.
